Parts of a Guitar

A guitar, acoustic or electric is made up of unique parts that not only give it a better look but also enhance its sound quality. Some specific guitars are played by musicians all over the world and what makes their sound unique is the unique parts they’re made of.

Below is the list of some main guitar parts

• Body

The body is that curvy part of a guitar that is responsible for the resonance of the sound coming out of it. The body of a guitar is different in acoustic and electric guitars made up of different types of wood. Electric guitars have solid wood bodies and the acoustic guitars have hollow bodies. Electric or classical guitars have a soundbox built inside their body.

• Headstock

The topmost part of the guitar is a headstock, the headstock consists of a tuning machine and a nut that connects it to the neck of a guitar. The shape of a headstock can vary accordingly, it can be straight, or stylized as per the model and the manufacturer.

• Neck

A neck of a guitar is a long piece of wood that connects the body to the head. The neck consists of a fretboard, frets, and truss rod. Guitar necks are one of the most important parts and are checked thoroughly when somebody is purchasing a guitar. The quality of the whole guitar is based on the rigidity of its neck .

• Strings

Strings generate sound in a guitar through vibrations when they are being strummed. A guitar consists of a total of 6 (or more) strings. They are made up of steel or brass in an acoustic or an electric guitar but are made up of nylon in classical guitars.

• Pickups

Pickups are found only in electric guitars and also known as their "heart", they receive the vibrations from the strings and convert them to electricity for an amplified sound. There are three main types of pickups, single-coil, humbucker, and P90.

• Plectrum

A plectrum or a pick is a triangular shape of plastic used to pluck or strum the guitar strings. Some of the guitarists prefer their fingers over plectrums to achieve a strong and sharp sound quality.

• Frets

Frets are thin elevated strips on the fretboard. When the string is pressed on a single fret it produces a different sound or note. A guitar consists of 18 to 22 frets.

• Bridge

The bridge or a saddle provides support to the strings and aligns them perfectly as they travel over the body. The height of the bridge is adjustable in electric guitars as it changes the distance between the strings and the fretboard.
