For proper stacking, it is better, to begin with, the biggest logs and laying them on the bottom. Doing this helps to create a strong base for the other pile. Those logs that are heavier should be stored beneath the lighter ones. With this, you will get a sturdy pile. It also helps to handle the high wind gusts. In case your firewood is not seasoned fully yet, then it is better to stack them bark-side down. This will help to remove the moisture from the wood.
Protecting them from elements:-
Storing the firewood is not just limited to stack them properly, it is also essential to protect them from the elements such as rain, snow, etc. For this using a firewood cover results best. Also if they are not aged, then make sure that you will leave the front as well as the back of the stack fully open. This will make it easy for the wood ends to breathe. On the other side, for your seasoned wood, it is better to use a full-sized firewood cover, to protect them from rain and moisture. Placing the stack under an overhang or in an open barn or shed also helps to store them safely.
Find the best storage place:-
Along with stacking the woods properly and protecting them from the elements, it is also essential to find the best storage place for them. Some of us like the convenience of storing and stacking our firewood beside the fireplace in the house. However, those who buy firewood in blue mountains, do not do so, as carrying firewood into the home, is likely to attract spiders, mice, termites, ants, or several other pests. It is better to choose a dry, and breezy area of the property. Also, make sure that you will if stack the wood at least a few inches away from the structure. This will allow the airflow behind the stack.
