New Wales star exposed he wept in the anthem of the Six Nations debut because he was resolute to make his mother proud

Shane Lewis-Hughes was called up to the Wales team last year after Ross Moriarty was injured and played against Scotland for the first time less than a week later.

Shane Lewis-Hughes recalled the emotions in his body in the final moments before his Welsh debut in the fall.

After Ross Moriarty fell to the ground with an ankle injury, the rude Cardiff Blues winger was a late call-up for Wayne Pivac's team.

Within a week, Lewis Hughes started taking part in the rescheduled Six Nations game against Scotland. It can be said that things are moving very quickly for the 23-year-old young man.

As part of the Land Rover Journey series, Lewis-Hughes spoke with Sam Warburton and revealed what he thought in the national anthem for his debut against Scotland.

"My mother, right now," he said, seemingly emotionally. "She's probably the main reason I did this.

“It fills me with motivation, when I think of everything she sacrificed to see me and my brother safe.”

"I remember crying in the national anthem, I thought of her.

"People might think, 'He's crying in the national anthem, he'd like to play for Wales,' but I was only thinking about my mother.

“Once they finished the national anthem, I was furious because I thought, 'I can't disappoint my mother today. While my mother was the major driving factor, a lot of people took me there. I thought, 'I'm doing this for my mom'." He did not dishearten his mother.

Lewis-Hughes continued to rack up three caps throughout the autumn campaign, winning the enthusiastic evaluation of Pivac calling him a "clone" of Alan Win Jones in terms of mentality and preparation - and Welsh captain himself.

He admitted that when he first came to training camp, he was a little impressed with his new teammates, but he firmly believed that he was there for most of his life to achieve this.

"From the moment I was eight or nine years old, I knew what I wanted to do," explained the flanker, who is currently out due to a shoulder injury.
