Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy: Leinster Lightning defeat Munster Reds by 7 wickets

DUBLIN – Leinster Lightning announced their intentions to dominate the Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy by comfortably beating Munster Reds in the morning game at Pembroke on Friday.

After being asked to bat first, the Munster Reds batsmen seemed composed early with Jack Carty (31) and PJ Moor (18) adding a quick 38-run opening partnership in 34 balls. Murray Commins then took control of the proceedings  and continued his batting form from the  50-over fixture into the T20 format on friday with a brilliant 51 off 34 balls - hitting 3 fours and 3 sixes during his 56-minute stay at the pitch.

Reds skipper Tyrone Kane hit a cameo of 20, but a rash of late wickets slowed the Munster side's innings, as they finished with 148-7 from 20 overs.

David O’Halloran, the tall 20-year old pacer from Malahide, put up an impressive show claiming 2-20 from his four overs, that caused the Reds batters a moments of worries on a batting-friendly pitch.

In reply, the Lightning lost the wicket of Kevin O’Brien early but man of the match Simi Singh (44) and Andrew Balbirnie (20) steadied the innings with a 49-run partnership. Singh looked in great touch and picked 22 runs off the first five deliveries of Fionn Hand’s first over, however on the last ball of the over he struck a hard low delivery back down the pitch, and Hand – moving in the opposite direction – stuck out a hand and held on to a brilliant catch.

When Balbirnie was dismissed shortly after, the Reds sensed an outside chance given the opponent's longer than usual tail, however, the in form batters of George Dockrell (48*) and Lorcan Tucker (28*) took the match away in a rush smashing the last 73 runs in 37 deliveries to seal a 7 wicket win with 29 balls left.
