Benefits of Drinking More Water

If you are seeking a number of health benefits of drinking more water, I'd like to tell you that the effects are truly beneficial and far-reaching. When you drink more, you get fitter and healthier. You can have greater energy, clearer skin, a thinner body, improved sleep, and more. The list goes on.

Of course, not all people will need to go on a detoxifying regime. Some people are simply dehydrated, whether it's through sweating or just poor diet and hygiene. But people who are often dehydrated--whether it's from a sweat session in the gym or simply not getting enough water in their system through exercise, are at risk for complications such as heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and cancer. You see, water is an essential part of our bodily functions. It lubricates tissue and moves it around, among other things.

So, if you are dehydrated, it helps to drink more. But that's only part of the equation. Many people are unaware that what they are drinking is not necessarily pure water but de-mineralized water which have had impurities introduced while being processed. What you should be drinking instead is spring or filtered water which contains no chlorine, no THMs (trihalomethanes), no drugs, and no pesticides. You may also be aware that most tap water is heavily contaminated with bacteria and parasites that can harm you or cause some health conditions.

So drinking more water--and staying hydrated--is necessary for your overall health. Now, let's look at the ways in which it helps. First, the water helps to activate your immune system, giving you more of a fight-or-flight response to potential infections or injury. It also flushes out waste products and toxins that can build up in your kidneys and colon, helping them to function better. And it can hydrate your skin so that it produces more collagen.

Another way in which it helps prevent dehydration is that when you drink a lot, you are consuming more liquid than you normally would. That's because when you are dehydrated, your body tends to hold onto whatever water it can, including water found in your cells. This is why you see people in recovery from surgery often experiencing rapid weight loss. They have been allowed to drink lots of water to flush out the fluids that caused their weight loss to occur quickly.

If you are dehydrated, there's good news: Your body is usually able to restore itself. But you can speed up the process by drinking more water. One study estimates that staying hydrated increased someone's life expectancy by 9 months! Now that's serviceable! So the next time you're feeling dehydrated, think of those previously mentioned benefits of staying hydrated and take a long, refreshing cold drink to restore yourself to proper hydration levels.
