Six Nations Rugby: CUNNINGHAM: WALES UNDER-20S MUST BUILD ON WINNING FEELING

Costello kicked Wales Under-20s to start the win

The Six Nations Games Wales trailed Ioane Nekule’s shot in the 14th minute and both teams. Had one player sent off, but a penalty and a Scarlet Fly-half shot turned the game around.

While the performance was far from perfect and the indiscipline resulted in Wales’ two yellow cards. Cunningham was pleased with the result, especially with Costello’s game management.

“I’m very happy to start the campaign with a win. It’s really important for us to keep the momentum going in the Championship,” said the Wales Under-20s head coach.

“It’s also the first time for these young players to experience rugby at the under-20 Test level. So it’s a great feeling for them to win,” he said.

‘That’s exactly what we wanted from Sam to show his experience. Of playing fair in the PRO14 scarlet, just showing maturity and slotting these kicks, a good drop goal.

‘It’s going to be a tough challenge (against Ireland on Friday). And it’s going to be a different kind of challenge. They play in a different style to the Italians, with a wider width in the game.

A lot of tests we’ve passed their kicking style, as they showed against Scotland. They were pretty strong forward, so it’s going to be tough.

‘But we’ve got to make sure we get back to normal because it’s a short turnaround. And we’ve got to make sure we fill the tank so the boys can go again on Friday.’

Wales is not the only team struggling to appease referees at Arsenal Park. Italy facing its own disciplinary problems, including three yellow cards in the first half.

But while the lack of playing time and conditions is a contributing factor. Cunningham stressed wales need to show more composure if they are to compete with top teams.
