Motivation- Get back on that Wagon | Q Academy | The Fit Gypsy | Victoria BC

We all have times in our lives where we lose our motivation, and fall off the “health and fitness wagon”. Somehow after some procrastinating, we just can’t seem to get back on it. Personal matters and genuine issues get in the way and we let that kill our motivation. Remember that this is OK! You are human, this is life. The real problem here is the ENDLESS excuses used to prolong this period before getting back on. Here are some motivational tips on how to say no to that mental chatter, stop the shaming and get back that nutrition and exercising wagon.

First things first- Forgive yourself

The last thing you want to do, is to have your motivation stirring from a “self defeating” mindset. Shake that off, forgive yourself, accept yourself FULLY as you are in that moment, and then start moving. The fitness industry has become so “Rah rah” and intense, which can be great when you are in the zone… but sometimes that doesn’t allow moments for us to sit in stillness, reflect and feel what it is that was causing us to stop our motivation in the first place.

Whatever is bothering you, just know that working out will make you feel happier.

When you are exercising, your brain releases feel good chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine, and an endorphin rush. So instead of reaching for that pint of “Ben and Jerry’s”,  go outside for a walk, run, bike ride, hike, hit the gym-anything to get yourself moving!

The longer you are off, the harder it is to get back on!

You get in a slump, the habit is broken and you are no longer feeling that endorphin kick.  The only way to get the motivation back is to be like “Nike” and just DO IT. Once you are out there, your body starts remembering how AWESOME you felt doing so and the healthy habits will start coming back.

Think of reasons bigger than yourself.

When we get infatuated on our own “petty” reasons to get back on the wagon- such as fat loss and appearance, we get lost in our own world and stuck in a low-vibrational thought pattern. Personally, I feel this is a selfish thought pattern. Start thinking of who else will be affected by you not keeping up with your health. For instance; playing with your children, will you be able to keep up to them, pick them up, and play your heart out with them if you are neglecting your health? If you were not physically fit enough to help others, such as volunteering at a shelter and not being able to help everyone, how would that affect the community around you? Thinking more of a community sense, helps you feel more of a “purpose” when connecting to your motivational goals.

Get an accountability Partner

Grab a friend and make a plan together. Write out your week in advance, and make it a fun challenge between the two of you. If you can not think of a friend, hire a personal trainer to create an epic program for you. If you do not want to hire a trainer, then start attending some classes! Check out the class schedule at your local gym, highlight the classes you want to attend, and put it where you will see it-fridge perhaps?

Consistency is KEY.

Aim for getting a workout in at least 3 times per week. Write your workout plan and dates in your day planner, arrange your schedule around your workouts to prevent excuses from happening.

Remember how GOOD you felt when you were consistent with your workouts and nutrition.

Visualize and FEEL how amazing you felt when you were consistent with your health plan. What will it look like to get back into it?  Changes in your mood, energy levels, how your body felt, as well as how you felt mentally etc. I always tell my clients to keep a journal with them to record the times that they felt amazing after a workout and read through those entries to help them get back on track.

You are trying to get back on the wagon with exercise but just don’t feel motivated to clean up your nutrition as well.

Remember that by doing one, the other should shortly follow. Our bodies are smart machines, they will remember how great you felt doing both and you will be craving less junk and more whole foods soon enough! So call a friend to chaperone you while you throw out all the junk in your kitchen/pantry while you stock it again with nutritious body-loving foods!

And just remember, the only person that is stopping you is YOU. So get out of your own way and START MOVING!!!
