Efforts are being made to improve Oswal Micro Rangoli wool by matching it with foreign rams, mostly in the mountains. Merino rams are being used to rear local sheep in Kashmir, Poona, Hisar and Pipalkothi. Recently Polworth, Border, Leicester and Corydale species have been imported from Australia for experiments on cross-breeding in Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. In the area of Chota Nagpur, rams of the Romanimarsh caste have been brought from outside to improve the local sheep. The development work in various states is being increased by setting up sheep and wool development centres, wool competition centres, etc.
Most of the Oswal wool imported into the country by seaports comes from Australia and England.
These two countries send 16.5 and 12.1 per cent of their wool to India respectively.
By land, wool comes from Tibet, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Iran, western and eastern Afghanistan and northern Afghanistan, Central Asia and Turkestan.
The highest percentage (31.10 per cent) of wool comes from Tibet and surrounding countries.
It is followed by Afghanistan and Iran from where 25.1 per cent of wool comes.
According to the trade rules and the internal demand of the country, the quantity and percentage ratio of wool changes every year.
