Today we are talking about how to use a Dynamo Walking Cane on stairs so I had a single point came with me here and I'm going to demonstrate how you go downstairs using a rail and a cane now when you go down the stairs or up the stairs for that matter it really doesn't matter which side of the body in regards to your injured leg the cane is in the main point is is that you have some support on both sides of the body when you're going up or down the stairs unlike when you're walking with a cane and it needs to be on the opposite side of the injured foot and if you need a refresher on that take a look at the video on how to walk with a cane so let me demonstrate how to come down a set of stairs so what you're going to do is you're going to hold on to the rail you're going to put the cane down and you're gonna lead down with your injured or weak foot first and then bring your good foot on down okay so you're gonna put the cane down bring your bad foot down first and then the good foot okay one more time here we're going to come down first with the bad foot and then the good foot.
Now we're going to take a look at how to walk out the stairs with a cane so again I have my cane and my hand over here at the rail on this side it doesn't matter which side the Walking Cane for Womens is in just so that we have support on each side of our body as we go up or down the stairs so what you're going to do when you're going up you're going to lead up with the good foot first so you leave the cane on the bottom step you're going to put your good foot up you're gonna kind of give it a little push on the king and bring your injured leg up okay so you're going to lead it up again with the good foot push up and come on up with your injured leg in the cane now on occasion people who will want to bring the cane up off the stairs first I'm ok with that I like to leave it on the stair the step that you' re coming off of because it is support for your injured leg and your injured leg is remaining down while you're moving your good leg up so this is what it looks like here again some people like to put it up here it's kind of the patient's preference but I prefer to keep it down here because it's actually supporting your injured leg so that's how you go up the stairs also how you go down with stairs with a cane that's it for today from adaptive equipment corner have a great day and don't forget if you can't do it adapt it.
You see here which are much shallower down at this end near the base of the Dynamo Walking Cane and at this end near the handle are really just there is gripping surfaces these allow me to get a more precise grip on the cane make it less likely that someone can pull the cane out of my hand as you can see if I hold here where it's more smooth and I pull like an move my hand around that very quickly and easily with these knurled areas these shallow notches I get much better purchase similarly on this end if I'm going to be using a technique that requires me to hold down at the bottom of the cane so that I'm striking with this larger surface if I'm having to hit someone or I'm trapping or in some way using the hook as a tool against someone again this area will give me a better purchase on the cane itself the hook area is also very important on a fighting cane this hook area is actually much wider than you will see on a standard walking cane the hook that comes in and actually closes can't be used to trap limbs can't be used to hook around the wrists. For example it's also going to be harder to take and twist the cane quickly in the hand if I need to do that you'll see a technique very soon where if someone grabs my hand I can use that twisting motion to create a trap to create pressure on their wrists and escape from that grasp or maintain control well if this hook comes in very tightly I can't make that twist maneuver nearly as easily so a wider opening on the hook is actually preferable for a fighting cane and the last thing we'll look at is the point at the hook now this is not very sharp you can see here that this comes down to a little bit of an edge but it's certainly not going to cut skin I can rub it against the back of my hand I can poke it against my arm and this isn't going to break skin it's not sharp by any stretch but it is a concentrated point that will again focus pressure. When we see some of the techniques where we're going to apply pressure with this point into the hand to make someone release us if they've grabbed us from behind or even into their kidney area if they're behind us and we're pulling forward or if they're in front of us and we're pulling in towards us that hook being pointy being a little bit sharper than normal is going to allow us to concentrate that pain effect cause more discomfort and be able to use our techniques more effectively so remember when it comes to choosing a tool for personal defence that tool that you're going to carry with you and rely on during the worst case scenario the simple hooked Dynamo Walking cane or Walking Cane for Womens that you're going to find at the pharmacy or the medical supply shop is probably the best bet it's the one that isn't going to raise too many eyebrows you're going to be able to carry it with you and you're going to be able to execute the techniques that we talked about very very efficiently if you look for a custom-made cane a cane it's actually purpose-built for personal defence or for fighting there are several good places you can find them they're going to be a little more expensive but they're probably worth the price if you're serious about personal cane defense check out more articles just like this one at the personal defense Network you
So you know it came like like this right no so the other thing works I thought was really neat Bob why don't you have a seat in there Bob how tall are you I'm six foot six six foot six and he sits down and it fits him quite well yep okay and we could you know push you around and we could put this Bigfoot Cane put the leg rest off to live this out and make all me really well now on the other hand Loni do you want to come out here yeah let's go we got someone who is five foot two and we'll put her in the same chair go ahead I'm not going to take the time to flip that out right now it still fits a reasonably well I mean that's a big contrast can you lift your feet up there you go and that one there you go the other thing is I should be trying to get over a threshold I hope we see this there's a little foothold here so that you can push down and you can just get another big feature you can just get a little weight off of the front if you're going over a small threshold then you can bump over that and that's a nice little feature to have not a major deal.
But it's nice all right Lana get out of here be nice what are you doing here all right into the breaks like all of them push down then they lock in a lock or undo a nice padded backrest mm-hmm padded seat right it's got a little would you call that a cooler Brad well you know when you're from Walking Stick you got to have a place if you're going to the Packer game where you could put your beverages right in there and that is removable it removes quite easily actually if you do not want to have that there you go and then you have open space for your legs if you wanted it and the final thing they gave us which I thought was kind of cool they gave us something oh you guys hit my cards it gave you along with some cards that you're supposed to carry with you because everybody that sees this is going to want to buy one you can hand these out to people you have marketing business.
I am there is one more thing Bob oh did I miss something well this is a small thing reflection on the back yeah flexors on the back they did take the time for all the little things yep and I took the time to look at the wheels in the bearings of the wheels because to me the wheels are critical is how long this is going to last and not just the wheels but how they make the bearings their ball bearings and they're not only ball bearings and they're not shielded but they're sealed in so that means they're sealed against the weather and that's a step up from shielded with the high-end right which is one step up which a standard one like this particular one here is shielded they do not hold up in the weather as well so this is just better for outdoors even all right this will quickly Brad who.
Hey everybody it's doctor Jo, and today I'm going to show you how to use a Walking Cane properly.
this is really important because if you don't have the right height, it can end up making you either lean over a lot or have your shoulder come up a lot and that's going to cause pain in other places.
that reason is you don't want it straight out because a lot of times if you're leaning into it and you don't want that bend so high where your shoulders coming up to your ear.so again you don't have to pull out a goniometer in which is what we have what you would check in the clinic, but you just want it to be comfortable with a slight bend and that head the handle here should be about where your greater trochanter is.
I'm going to turn and you can see there's that little bend in the elbow there.
Most Walking Cane for Womens have this little knob here.
and then you just click on the button and you can go up as much as you need to, or you can pull it back down, but make sure once you get it in the right position you tighten this back up because a lot of times especially if it's down on the bottom, this part will slide down if it's not tight enough, and then every time you walk it goes clink clink.o if that doesn't bother you, I guess that's fine it does okay if it's not tight, but if it's tightened up it keeps that solid and so it's nice in the solid spot and that little piece doesn't roll around.
To properly fit, first place the tip of the Dynamo Walking Canes against the side of foot.
Keep adjusting until you get it correct.
To practice the correct pattern, stand still and move the cane and the involved side together.
When you dance, you move with your partner.
The Walking Cane and the involved side are partners, so they always have to move together.
Going up the steps, one step at a time, step up with the uninvolved side fist followed by the involved side and cane together.
