What changes have been made in the CCNA certification from February 2020?

The specifics are yet to be known, but the General is this:

  • The CCNA becomes a lot more broad in coverage. This means more material. Example: wireless was its own track. You could be a CCNA Routing and Switching, and/or a CCNA Wireless. There was a lot of overlap in the exams.

  • The CCNA process will now require only one exam. This could go two ways. Recall that in 2003 or so, the latest version of the CCNA was one hard exam. It only covered Routing and Switching. Somewhere along the line, they found that people were failing the exam, so they turned the exam into two exams, and CCENT became the new “entry-level” cert. This two exam path was less intimidating. They then started adding all of the various flavors of CCNA. So with one exam, it will either be easier, which dilutes the value of the cert; harder, which increases the value of the cert, or subject to some other case, like breaking it up again.

  • They are introducing the concept of “badging”. Presumably, one can take supplemental exams on particular areas of expertise. This is similar to holding multiple CCNAs. As an example, I hold 4 active CCNAs and a CCDA. Under the new scheme, I would hold at most 1 CCNA and 4–5 badges. No word yet on the cost of these exams or actual exam topics.
  • I’m told course material will be out later this summer, and texts in the fall.
