All you need to know about folder gluers

Folding gluing is the process of gluing workpieces along the side seam and flap using special equipment. As a result, you can get a wide variety of products, ranging from ordinary cardboard boxes to printed products such as folders, envelopes, or gift boxes.

  • Of course, today, all this is not done by hand. For the automation of labor, international folder gluer machines have long been produced: both not particularly complex in design and with the widest possibilities. And the choice of equipment here entirely depends on the goals of production.

Varieties of folding gluing lines

Folder-gluing lines allow for folding-gluing, that is, automatic gluing of printed products or production of boxes. This technology can be used to create boxes with a folding bottom, double-walled, standard type, with 1-3 gluing points and any special boxes from blanks. It is customary to talk about such types of folding gluing:

  • On folders

We can talk about business folders for A4 documents or folders with a flap provided for restaurant invoices.

  • On boxes

Usually, for this purpose, cardboard with a density of 220-400 g/m2 is used. In this case, folding is carried out at 1–3 points; a specific number of them is selected in accordance with the configuration of the product. More points can be added if required.

  • On the envelopes

In this case, the paper can be used as a density of 100 g/m2 and a density of paperboard of 400 g/m2. Usually, folding is carried out at two points, while the valves are folded inward or remain outside. The closing valve is often fitted with double-sided adhesive tape, which is 4–9 mm wide. Courier services usually order envelopes with the provided opening tape.

  • On the posters

Posters are covered with double-sided tape automatically. Depending on the customer's wishes, the tape can go along the entire length of the product or in fragments.

Folding and gluing processes

Due to folding gluing, a non-voluminous workpiece becomes a full-fledged product. The process involves folding along pre-prepared fold lines and the subsequent application of glue.

The machines used by modern company’s process a fairly wide range of materials, including thick cardboard, plastic, and such types of cardboard as metalized, laminated, corrugated, and micro-corrugated cardboard.

Such equipment is most widespread in the field of packaging production, where folding gluing of simple cardboard boxes with a folding bottom with gluing points cannot be dispensed with. This technique is usually referred to as specialized gluing machines or units for gluing boxes. But despite the name, such devices are suitable for the production of envelopes and commercial products.

The process of making a box looks like this: the blank enters the folder-gluer when the die-cutting and creasing are completed. Here it rests on the rails; then, with the help of rotary clamps and other mechanisms, folding to the required positions occurs. In the next step, cold glue or hot melt glue is applied at predetermined locations. And in the end, the future product is pressed until the glue has completely solidified and enters the display section.

The entire path of the workpiece is monitored during folding. And the equipment responsible for quality control rejects products that do not meet the standards set by the manufacturer. The result is high-quality packaging, cardboard boxes, folders with pockets, envelopes, and other types of printing products.

On a reliable folding gluing line with high productivity, large quantities of products are manufactured. You need to understand that a well-made cardboard package automatically becomes an attractive advertisement for any product and allows you to increase sales.
