Everton Football: Feyenoord follow Everton's new stadium plans with stunning £375m arena

Feyenoord's plans to build an iconic new riverside stadium, with a commitment to preserving the heritage of the existing site, bear a strong resemblance to Bramley Moore Dock, which Everton will soon enter. Everton will begin construction on Bramley Moore Quay later this month, but they are not the only major European soccer club planning a move to an iconic new riverside stadium.

As the only place, the Blues have ever won a European trophy, Feyenoord's home stadium De Kuip (Dutch for 'bathtub') will always have a special place in the hearts of Evertonians. However, Feyenoord is preparing to move to an impressive new building on the banks of the River Meuse, much like Everton moved from Anfield to Goodison Park in 1892.

As a working-class club, plans to build a new waterfront stadium that combines modern glass elements with materials befitting the maritime environment will bring about an urban renaissance and a commitment to the heritage of the existing site, much as Everton is doing. Max Scherer, business manager at the Office of Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), explained the similarity of the vision to Everton's move from Walton to Vauxhall, rather than a previously controversial site like the satellite town of Kirkby.

He told the Echo, Five or six years ago Feyenoord made several tries to build a new stadium. Often there are several attempts before they actually work. One plan to redevelop the existing stadium essentially failed because it didn't give Feyenoord the revenue it needed to grow financially as a club or to advance its sporting ambitions. At that point, one of my colleagues at OMA, David Gianotten, contacted Feyenoord, and the two sides talked for about six months about what would be feasible.

At that point, we hadn't done any sketches, but there was a shared vision that the stadium should not only be isolated for soccer matches but that it could act as a catalyst for the development of the larger city. Feyenoord is a true working-class football club and has the largest fan base in the Netherlands, with around 2.5 million people. However, much like Everton, they are not as often successful as some of their bigger rivals, in this case, Ajax.

They have ambitions to stay in Rotterdam Zuid (south of Rotterdam), so a new stadium is planned just 800 meters from the existing one. It is located in a deprived area of Rotterdam, so the whole city will experience a social and economic boost as part of the urban development. We also plan to build 4,000 housing units, recreational facilities, public squares, and new parks, and the stadium will be at the center of these facilities.

Instead of building a functional and operational stadium outside the city, near the highway, it will be located on the Meuse River, one of the busiest rivers in Europe. It would be partly on the river and partly on the railroad line that runs from Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Paris. But in this part of the city, which is largely characterized by infrastructure, we use the stadium to connect the neighborhoods, with the goal of being functional even on non-match days.
