Charter Boat Maintenance Checklist

Fishing charters leave lasting memories. Hate 2 Lose Fishing Charter follows strict routine boat maintenance procedures including exterior cleaning, proper storage and rigorous engine maintenance to ensure clients always remember their charter with us.

1. Exterior Care

Maintaining boat cleanliness prevents the spread of invasive species and removes sea salt which will begin to erode and cause abrasions and scratches on the exterior of a boat.

Cleaning Tips for Different Boat Materials
  • Canvas: Proper canvas care preserves the appearance and sustains waterproofing properties. Clean canvas with a light brush, mild soap, and fresh water.
  • Fiberglass: Wax or polish fiberglass with products designed to protect the gel coat to maintain fiberglass integrity. Wax occasionally but be sure to wash away dirt and salt after every outing.
  • Upholstery: Boats likely have vinyl-covered seating, since vinyl is durable and easy to clean. Regularly wipe down to prevent dirt buildup, mold, and mildew.
  • Woodwork: Wooden components are generally teak, a durable tropical hardwood. Occasionally wash teak with mild teak cleaner.

2. Proper Storage

There are advantages to both wet and dry boat storage. Dry boat storage provides easy accessibility for maintenance, deters potential water damage, and reduces the amount of work required when it’s time to sail:
  • Apply grease to the shaft.
  • Clean the propeller and shaft and inspect them for damage.
  • Disconnect the battery and store it in a cool, ventilated area.
  • Fill the tank to at least 90% and add anti-bacterial stabilizing agents to the fuel.
  • Flush the engine, water lines, and water tanks with fresh water to remove the salt.
  • If the boat has a refrigerator, keep the door open.
  • Lubricate spark plug holes.
  • Open the drain plugs to allow precipitation to drain out.
  • Remove all food, carpets, and electronics.
  • Replace cracked hoses.
  • Replace inline fuel filters.
  • Top off the antifreeze.

3. Boat Engine Maintenance

Hate 2 Lose Sport Fishing Charters exercises regular boat engine maintenance. We ensure our boats are always clean, checked thoroughly, and are in working order. Hate 2 Lose Fishing Charters is focused on providing high-quality service and an exceptional customer experience to everyone.

Before performing engine maintenance, it’s a good idea to check manufacturer’s recommendations.

General Outboard Motor Care Tips:
  • Check the propeller for fishing line and excessive oil buildup.
  • Confirm the fuel and fuel tank vents are open.
  • Secure engine mount screw clamps.
  • Verify the water intake is free of debris.
