For those that are still unfamiliar with the term "alternative", let me explain what it is and how it came about. Alternative is a term derived from "other" and "new". This means different, original and sometimes bizarre ways of presenting things. Many of us may not fully understand all of the great alternative acts that come out of Boston each year. I certainly didn't when I was younger, but as time has gone by I have gained a better appreciation for what they do and why so many people are alternative.
The first artist to really spark my interest was Sufjan Stevens. His self titled album became one of my all time favorite albums. The quality of his music made it instantly memorable and very cool to listen to. In some ways, Sufjan has grown into his instrument of choice while simultaneously developing into an incredible singer/songwriter/composer. You can tell that he feels the same way you feel when you are listening to his music.
With Sufjan Stevens and many others you have the joy of hearing songs written specifically for someone like yourself. There is nothing quite like listening to an alternative music CD and hearing something that you love. It just makes you feel alive!

One of my favorite things about him is that even though he is considered a punk rocker, he has a great sense of humor and a love of humanity. He brings a new found sincerity to alternative music.
Dave Brubeck was a well-loved and much loved African-American musician who played with such notable artists as Chet Atkins, Ray Vaughan, Buddy Holly, and others. Some other famous guitarists that may have influenced him include Stevie Ray Vaughan and Buddy Holly. Brubeck's impact on alternative music is still being felt today. His songs "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" and "I'm A Believer" are instantly recognizable and still generate an audience. Brubeck inspired many young musicians who have gone on to be successful in their own right.
Paul McCartney is another great example. He is responsible for some of the classic songs that everyone knows. Many people would probably never have heard of him if it weren't for McCartney. Many of us were fans of his before we actually heard him play live, which is kind of an amazing thing.
You may not realize this, but electronic music has been influencing music all over the world for many years. It can be found in many forms of music and most importantly, it continues to influence us today. Take classical music for instance. Even though the composers were unknown, they were able to leave a lasting impression on the public due to the sounds they created and the emotion they expressed. The same can be said for many different types of electronic music.
Of course, there are those that will say electronic and other forms of music are just a fad. They will state that the public's love for these new styles won't last very long. However, it has definitely lasted quite some time. The public continues to buy these types of products because they connect with the emotions, feelings, and music that are available through technology.
