What is Screen Printing?

Screen Printing also known as Silk Screening is a method of printing graphics onto a t-shirt using thick inks that lay on top of the shirt instead of soaking into the shirt itself.  Screen Printing is the most common way of producing shirts that companies use and is a great way of bulk producing custom t-shirts.

Since it uses these thicker inks, screen printing is best suited for graphics with only 1 or 2 colors.  The thick ink has a soft feeling to the touch and makes for an amazing pop.  If your design has minimal colors, screen printing will be best for you because of its great look and affordability even in bulk.

How Does Screen Printing Work?

The process of screen printing can be difficult to understand at first, but we will simply explain it.  A thin mesh is stretched over a frame, originally this screen was made from silk hence the name silk screening but is now made mostly from polyester.  A negative of the design is printed onto the screen and is placed onto the shirt.  Once set, the ink is rolled over the screen, and only the areas with the design printed on them allow the paint to slip through onto the shirt.  The ink sets, and then the shirts are set aside to dry.  Screen Printing can be done at home, but is almost always done best by a professional screen printing company since they will have the equipment and knowledge to do the project correctly.

We recommend screen printing for simple company logos, custom sports gear, and t-shirts with text on them.  The color of the shirt you choose will not matter, as screen printing works great on both light and dark t-shirts.  Other methods of printing can have trouble with darker t-shirts, but the beauty of screen printing is that with the right inks and knowledge, will stand out better than other methods of t-shirt printing.
