Learn How Capsule Coffee Makers Work

This article gives a brief guide as to how capsule coffee makers work.

Espresso is tricky. It’s delicious in the morning, at lunch, or even as a nightcap. We throw it in our drinks, macchiatos, and take it straight. Yet, making the delicious brew appears to be some kind of science project if you’re new to it. Enter the pod or capsule coffee maker.

Instead of determining which grounds to use, packing a cup or pod, and using a special espresso maker, consumers can now take a shortcut by investing in a capsule coffee machine.

These machines are often smaller than traditional espresso setups, so that’s helpful for those who are minimalists at heart or who don’t have a lot of extra kitchen counter space to spare.

Even better, these machines are digitized, so you can program the machine to kick on right as your morning alarm sounds.

Using the machine is easy. It’s very straightforward. You just have to load the capsule, ensure the water is sufficient, and press the button. Cleaning up is smooth, too. You just remove the pod, wipe the machine down, and go on with your merry day.

Here are the parts you may encounter in the process:

  • Water Supply. Unless you have a very sophisticated machine that’s tapped into a water source, you’re going to have to add water to the machine. Some machines are small and only take half a liter. Others are a lot bigger, taking up to 1.5 liters of water.
  • Siphon. This part isn’t usually dealt with by the end user. It’s just the tube that gets the water from the tank to the evaporator. It’s the heart of the machine, but you will mostly just leave it on its own to do its job.
  • Kettle. The machine is going to need at least some type of vessel to hold the beverage as it is poured out of the maker. You may decide to buy a machine that spills it into the cup. Others will have a kettle or carafe.

The mechanics of the pressure involved are tricky, but anything labeled 15-19 bars will be just fine for the average coffee maker. No need to play around with the metrics. If you like the coffee that’s brewing, that’s all that really matters. Stick to your budget and find what works for you.
