THE HISTORY

Case knives has a very long history tracing its roots back to 1889. Case ownership has changed hands several time over the years. It was family owned business until it was sold to American Brands Inc. in 1972, it was then sold to James F. Parker of Chattanooga TN. in 1988, then to River Associates Inc. of Chattanooga, TN in 1990, the final sale of Case knives was to Zippo Mfg Co. of Bradford, PA in 1993 who currently own the company.

There are counterfeits out there, so knowing other details about knives of various eras is also important. When identifying Case knives we look for tang stamps, shields, bone & other handle cover colors & styles, jigging patterns, hafting techniques & more can be used for further validation. Shopping trusted sites & trusted knife dealers is something we highly recommend to all beginner & intermediate collectors.

Throughout the long history of W. R. Case & Sons, there have been many different stamps used on its knives. These stamps are located on the tang of the master blade, and can be used to help identify when the knife was manufactured.

Below is a picture of where the stamp is located, along with the most common stamps and the years that they were used. Keep in mind that a knife’s tang stamp alone cannot be relied upon for a 100% positive identification of age.

This is explained on Wikipedia:

“Case knife” is a term used to refer to a table knife, i.e. a knife intended for use at the dining table. The origin of this usage comes from a time when inns did not customarily provide eating utensils with meals. The table fork was relatively new, and was often sold in combination with a knife and, sometimes, a spoon. Thus the term refers to a knife that was sold in a case, as part of a set of utensils intended for use in dining.

“Now then there’s a Case and there’s a case when yer talk in about knives. A case knife is on the table to the right of the dinner plate next to the teaspoon. It’s what you use to cut yer food if the side of your fork just can’t cut it.

A Case knife will likely be found in yer front pants pocket (right or left depended on yer handedness). A Case (or similar type) knife is an essential part of any Appalachian citizen’s wardrobe (yes, ladies are included. In fact, encouraged)!

A case knife has its place too. It makes a decent screwdriver in a pinch. It is good for fishing small items out of sink drains. Other that those none comes to mind but I’m sure there’s more. Oh Yeah, if they are strong enough they are excellent substitutes for motorcycle tire irons. Unfortunately most are not. Real silver bends too easy and stainless steel breaks. Oh well I’ll keep thinking.
