Top Questions to Ask Before You Accept a Moving Quote

Clarify every doubt before you agree to a moving company quote. Here are a few questions you need to ask your moving company.

As per the statistics, more than a million moves happen annually and it’s nothing short of a miracle that most of them go smoothly. Though the process of moving itself is a big challenge, the toughest task among everything is picking the right moving company, especially in Rhode Island. Why I say Rhode Island – because I had a bitter experience moving there a year back.

It is a fact that a lot of moving scams or shoddy practices happen around and you need to be highly vigilant while dealing with a moving company, especially while signing a moving company quote. You shouldn’t jump to sign one, instead must read it thoroughly and understand it.

You must have a clear picture of the moving company you are dealing with. I remember, I agreed to a moving quote trusting the mover in Rhode Island and had to pay a heavy price. Do not fall into such traps but always research the track record of your moving company, ask about their business, qualifications, and references.

Here, we provide a few questions you need to ask your moving company before you agree to the moving cost quote.

  1. How long have you been in business?

Your moving company needs to be an experienced one. It should have the expertise of moving homes for a minimum of 5 years. While hiring someone born yesterday, you cannot judge the record and the quality of service. Though a long period does not guarantee high-quality service, you can gauge the company’s expertise.

  1. Do you have a reference for your service?

All reputed moving companies will be happy to share their references and testimonials from previous customers. You can ask a few persons whom the company calls their satisfied clients. Check references online and look for reviews that provide detailed examples of the reviewer’s experience, whether positive or negative. These tasks will help you know whether you are hiring the right mover or not.

  1. Is the moving company licensed, bonded, and insured?

Legally, every moving company should be licensed and insured with a USDOT Number and be registered with the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) to run interstate. Confirm the license details and check the BBB website for accreditation details. Do not hire a moving company that is not licensed.

  1. What documentation will I receive before the moving day?

Discuss with the moving company about the commitments, contracts, and itinerary. Ask the mover what documents you should expect to read and sign and what you need to prepare for moving day? Before you agree to a moving cost estimate and sign a contract, understand what you are paying for each service and why? This will help you plan for additional moving costs.

  1. How do you determine the cost to move?

Ask the moving company how it calculates the moving cost estimate. While some movers charge by the volume of household items and the distance they need to cover, a few others charge by the hour and the size of their tea. Some moving companies also charge by a combination of the two. Always confirm this part before you agree to the cost.

  1. Is it a binding or non-binding estimate?

Generally, moving cost estimates are divided into two – binding and non-binding. Binding estimates guarantee the total cost of your move and have rules that determine how much the final moving cost can exceed the estimate.

Non-binding estimates are subject to increase based on the exact weight of your move and any additional charges outlined in your contract.

Ask the moving company what the type of estimate it is offering you.

There should be relevant questions and your moving company needs to answer all. This will avoid unwanted chaos on the final day.
