Gifted kids who choose to home school face serious obstacles in finding the right materials to help feed specific educational needs for advanced study. These kids face a host of issues related to finding the right school work, including asynchronous development, financial expense, and a dearth of understanding regarding gifted online education. Fortunately, online math education for gifted homeschooling doesn't have to be hard.
Online Math Education and Advanced Study
While there are many online homeschooling options for students who learn at home, for gifted children, two programs stand out. Education Program for Gifted Youth, or EPGY, is Stanford University's online math curriculum. The program is used in schools around the world, and by enrolled public and private school students and homeschoolers alike. Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth, like the Stanford program, is designed for advanced study by gifted homeschoolers.
Homeschool Math Curriculum and EPGY
Education Program for Gifted Youth is not open to all students. Gifted homeschooling children must apply for acceptance. Children under the age of seven can send standardized test scores, IQ tests, or other neuropsychological tests that demonstrate ability or aptitude. The EPGY site lists acceptable tests for the homeschool math curriculum application.
Students age seven and over can submit these tests scores as well, or can take an online aptitude test. Admission depends on the scores, but students who are accepted can register immediately for homeschool math curriculum and start advanced study within one to two weeks (sometimes sooner).
Sessions last for three months, and all work is done online, with course tests faxed in to be graded by hand. Enrollment in online math education is not age dependent. Ability is the only criteria for moving up through homeschool math curriculum levels for gifted homeschooling. Courses begin with kindergarten-level math and go through Linear Algebra at the university level. Students can take Stanford University college credit courses online through EPGY.
EPGY allows students to place homeschool math curriculum on hold if families are traveling, or if students need to take a break for any other reason. Also, there is an option to hire writers for school paper.
Online Math Education and CTY
The Johns Hopkins University program, Center for Talented Youth, operates much like EPGY once the student is enrolled, but has a different entrance process for the online math education program. Students must be invited to sit for standardized testing for CTY, nominated by parents or teachers for the invitation. Parents who nominate their child must pay a $37 fee. Once invited, grades 2-6 take the SCAT reasoning test, which costs $55 and is administered at Prometric testing centers across the U.S. Students in grades 7-8 must sit for the SAT ($42) or ACT ($32). The online math education program extends from grades 2-12. The final year a gifted homeschooler can qualify for CTY is grade eight.
Like EPGY, the homeschool math curriculum is extensive and intensive. Online math education courses extend from grade one through college-level Multivariable Calculus.
