Yummy Indian Vegetarian Dishes That Aren’t Paneer

Paneer is one of the most well-known Indian vegetarian foods. It’s a versatile ingredient that can be made to use many types of Indian delicacies. But don’t worry if you’re not into paneer or cheese in general. You can find many vegetarian delicacies at the best delivery restaurants in NYC that aren’t made with this ingredient.

Indian cuisine makes use of various spices and ingredients that bring out the best flavors in even the most disliked vegetables. These dishes include yummy snacks, indulgent gravies and quick dry bites. Here are some non-paneer dishes for you to try:

Samosa

Whether it’s for celebration or time pass, samosa is the go-to snack for many Indians. The crisp batter with soft spiced potatoes inside makes for a delicious combo. Some tea and tamarind chutney on the side completes it. Paneer can be used as stuffing but potatoes and peas are more popular.

Gobi Dum Aloo

Gobi dum aloo is a simple dish with simple ingredients enhanced with spices. It’s a commonly served Indian food in New York. It consists of cauliflower florets and potatoes, spiced for taste and color.

Samosa Chaat

Another snack cum appetizer worth enjoying is the samosa chaat. It’s samosa mashed and dipped in yogurt, topped with a mint sauce and a tamarind sauce. The yogurt mildens the spiciness of the green sauce.

Aloo Paratha

Aloo paratha is the quintessential breakfast of many North Indian houses. The leavened flatbread stuffed with mashed potatoes has the energy you need to start your day. You can also have it for lunch. Some butter and achar, a pickled side dish, complement it. Other popular vegetarian stuffings include onion and radish.

Tehri

Tehri is like the veg version of biryani. It’s made with basmati rice, vegetables, and spices. The spices give the rice a yellow hue and add flavor and aroma to the dish. Potatoes are commonly used along with cauliflower, peas, and carrots. You must have some raita (a yogurt-based side dish) and papad (a thin cracker) on the side.

Saag

If you enjoy the green gravy after you’re done with paneer cubes in saag paneer, then you’ll enjoy saag. Saag is a pasty spicy dish prepared with greens like spinach, mustard greens, collard greens, basella, or other greens. Loads of spices are added for flavor. It’s usually eaten with roti or other flatbreads.

Rajma

Rajma is a simple curry dish made with red kidney beans. Many whole spices are used to prepare the thick gravy dish. It’s usually served with boiled rice and is rich in protein.

Chhole

Chhole is another protein-rich dish that vegetarians can enjoy. Its main ingredients are chickpeas with onions, tomatoes, and assorted spices mixed in for the gravy. It’s usually served with fried flatbreads like bhature or poori. And like with rajma, chhole is commonly eaten with boiled rice.

Bhindi Do Pyaza

Bhindi do pyaza is a delicious dish made with tender okra pods, onions, and lots of spices. Tomatoes may be added to balance the spiciness. The onions are added twice to the dish during the cooking process, which is where the name do pyaza may come from.

Dal Makhani

Dal makhani is one of the creamiest lentil soups you can have. The tiny black gram adds a bit of graininess to the texture of the buttery brown dish. It’s usually garnished with some butter or cream and coriander leaves.

Dal Tadka

Dal tadka is another popular lentil dish that’s more on the spicy side. It consists of husked and split pigeon pea lentils or husked and split red lentils. The lentils are cooked with spices and herbs fried in oil. The fried spices and herbs are added to the lentils with the oil for tempering, thus the name tadka.

Baingan Ka Bharta

Baingan ka bharta is one of the most delicious eggplant dishes you could have. To prepare this dish, you need to mince grilled eggplant and mix it with tomato, onion, herbs, and spices.
