How to Connect a Microphone to your speaker?

If you’re setting up karaoke at home, or just want to connect a microphone up to an existing device, then you’ve come to the right place. We’ll go through all the best ways to connect a microphone to following devices individually, so keep reading!

We’ll give you plenty of options to try, but keep in mind that they won’t all work, it depends which type of microphone and model of device you’re using, so check the user guide of each device and microphone to confirm which methods are compatible. No matter what device or microphone you’re using, here are the main steps you need to follow.

How to Connect a Microphone to your speaker?

Connect a Microphone to a Speaker

Connecting a microphone to a speaker can be really simple and direct, if you’re using a PA speaker, or one specifically designed for singing or karaoke. This is how to do it:You can sometimes connect the microphone and speaker wirelessly if they have a bluetooth function. Some microphones use an XLR connection and others use USB.

If your microphone isn’t designed to take in a microphone input, then it’s probably because it doesn’t have an amplifier built-in. Usually, the output of a microphone is not enough to drive a speaker alone. This is why you need an amplifier to help. You can go ahead and purchase an amplifier which will be connected to your microphone and speaker to link them together. Or, you can purchase a speaker specifically designed for microphone inputs. Here is the DinDin  for karaoke. There’s something for everyone, with the lowest option being under $65.

There are a range of reasons why it won’t work to plug a microphone directly into a loudspeaker, including:

Passive loudspeakers: Passive loudspeakers have no amplifiers and so no gain can be added to the micronautical signal. To drive a speaker, a mic Level Signal is much too low.
Active microphones: active microphones need some form of power (typically DC bias or phantom power) to work. Some active speakers, such as the Mackie SRM150, provide phantom power so that active microphones can work properly without being linked directly. Many loudspeakers have no such choice, however.

Let’s address briefly the difference between passive and active/driven speakers.

Powered loudspeakers have built-in amplifiers and need power for proper functioning. The driven speakers with micro inputs are designed to raise a micro-level signal to a speaker-level signal with enough gain. Therefore powered loudspeakers don’t need external amplifiers. But with multi-channel mixing boards and amplifiers they can still be used (and are still used).Passive loudspeakers have no internal amplifiers, on the contrary. No external power is needed, but external amplification is necessary to effectively project speaker-level signals (boosted from micro or line-level).

Active Microphones Vs Passive

For microphones too, the words “passive” and “active” apply.Passive microphones need no external power and have no internal amplifiers (though passive step-up output transformers can boost a passive microphone’s output voltage).

External power is required for active microphones (either through DC bias voltage, phantom power, or separate power supply). Vacuum tubes and FETs as well as the printed circuit boards of several microphones are the active components of active mics.

Vacuum tubes and FETs serve as both impedance converters as well as “pseudo-amplifiers” and demand control. Vacuum tubes need greater power and hence tube mics are also equipped with their own power supply unit. FET (and JFET) microphones can run on a fairly low DC phantom power of 48 volts, or even a lower DC bias voltage.

All condenser microphones, and USB / digital microphones, are available. When they have active components some ribbon  are active.
