Skin Conditions Related to Allergies

There are many different conditions that can affect a person's skin, whether these are allergies, rashes, or more we will discuss the basics of these conditions and their treatments.  It is very important to visit an allergy specialist for any serious allergy problems or skin conditions that may be caused by allergies because they will fully understand the condition and how to best treat the specific issue for each patient.

Eczema

Atopic Dermatitis, more commonly referred to as eczema, is caused by skin barrier dysfunction which results in dryness and inflammation.  It commonly presents itself as dry, red and itchy skin.  It is one of the most common skin conditions, affecting 1 in 5 infants and 1 in 50 adults.  Children who have a history of allergic disease such as asthma are more likely to develop eczema over time.  Up to 80% of children with eczema will develop asthma or allergic rhinitis in the future.  There are many treatments such as creams to control the itching and skin irritation.  There are many other treatments to achieve relief of symptoms, and an allergist will be able to find the specific treatment plan that will work for each case.

Hives

Urticaria is the medical term for the common skin condition known as the hives.  Hives are red whelps or bumps that are extremely itchy.  About 20% of the population will experience hives at some point in their life, and there are many causes.  Hives are considered acute if they occur for less than 6 weeks, and chronic hives are ones that last for longer than 6 weeks.  Acute Hives are commonly caused by medication allergyfood allergy or insect allergy.  They can also be caused by infections, heat, or even exercise which is why it is important to visit a specialist who will be able to determine the exact cause and treatment for each case of hives they encounter.

Angioedema

Angioedema is swelling of the tissue beneath the surface of the skin.  It commonly occurs with hives, but can also occur on its own.  It presents as swelling of the eyes, lips, tongue, hand and/or feet.  The swelling can also occur in the abdomen.  If swelling of the throat develops, this can be life threatening and requires immediate medical attention.  The swelling can be related to an allergic reaction, medications, or hereditary.

Contact Dermatitis

Contact Dermatitis is a type of rash that occurs due to direct skin contact with an allergen.  The contact will produce a red, bumpy and itchy rash.  Some of the most common causes of contact dermatitis are poison ivy and nickel.  If you have a nickel allergy, you can develop a rash after wearing certain jewelry that contains even a small amount of nickel.  It is also possible for one to become allergic to ingredients in personal hygiene products such as shampoo, soap and sunscreen.  An allergist will be able to determine the exact cause of contact dermatitis through the use of allergy patch testing

There are more skin conditions that could be caused by allergens than discussed in this article, these are just some of the most common that are seen on a daily basis by any allergist.  By making an appointment with an allergy specialist you will be able to find relief from your skin allergies and find a specific treatment plan that will work to alleviate your symptoms over time.
