An increasing number of companies are using Transportation Management Systems to reduce freight expenses, track deliveries in real-time, and improve customer service.

In terms of supply chain planning, a transportation management system is generally part of a larger supply chain management, although it may also exist independently of the supply chain. Everything related to moving goods and/or services is considered transportation. Transport, for example, is the movement of products and/or services from one place to another. This includes transporting farm equipment, equestrian products, and personal property. It also includes the act of moving or lifting by power or even animals. In transportation, time, cost, and efficiency are the most important aspects to consider. A supply chain's time is measured by how often and for how long freight moves through it.

This term refers to how long it takes to transport products from their origination point till they reach their final destination. Demand-based, supply-based, and demand-sensitive transit times can be identified in three different ways in transportation management systems. Transport costs may surpass the worth of the items, yet a firm must deliver the item to its customers as quickly as feasible. A supply-based transportation management system looks at circumstances that are driven by demand during peak periods, as well as the need for transportation during non-peak periods. Lastly, weather, holidays, and other economic factors affect transportation demand in demand-sensitive systems.

The manufacturer, the shipper, and the carrier are all involved in the logistics of any particular delivery. There's a lot on the shipper's plate, including figuring out how to maximize the connection with the manufacturer and planning accordingly. It may be necessary for shippers to engage with third parties to maximize their connection with the carrier if the manufacturer does not give enough information or assistance. Using a transportation management system (TMS), shippers and manufacturers may work together more efficiently, resulting in the manufacturer delivering the products according to the shippers' specifications.
