What is onboarding software?

You probably know that onboarding is when a company welcomes new hires and helps them get up to speed. But did you know companies turn to software tools for this process? In this post, we are going to explore what onboarding software is, how it has evolved over the years, and how companies use it today.

Onboarding software gives organizations the ability to track and measure every one of their new employees' activities during the first few weeks of their hiring process; from providing training materials to offering guidance on cultural fit. It also allows them to make sure that they are assessing the right needs, setting goals, and mapping out individual processes when designing job roles. Statistically speaking, onboarding new hires can account for as much as an 8% increase in retention rates from one year after they started their position. The most successful companies develop their onboarding strategy based on employees' needs, organization's goals, and cultural drivers.

What are the 4 phases of onboarding?

  • The first phase is often the most exciting: It’s when you receive your welcome email from your company. You can’t wait to start using your new office and meet the people you will be working with. In the first phase, you might interview other employees who have been at the company for a while and ask them how long they have been there. You will want to know if there are any upcoming changes that will affect your role or if there are any “dirty little secrets” about your new work environment you need to know beforehand.

2) The second phase is also known as “absorption,” where we are immersed in our new environment and get to know our coworkers. In the second phase, you will jump right in and start interacting with your new coworkers. You will be introduced to departmental expectations, including how the work is prioritized, what the culture of the department is like, how much time will be spent on each task and what tools/software you need in order to complete those tasks. It’s important for you as a new employee to ask questions so that everyone knows that you are committed to becoming part of the team.

3) This leads into the third phase where we have a meeting with HR, who talks to us about payroll, benefits, our schedule, etc. They go over leave policy - which includes vacation days and sick days - as well as how much time off we are allowed per year (including unpaid leave). In the third phase, you will meet with HR to begin filling out paperwork that will be required for you to be as productive as possible in your role. If there are any benefits relevant to your job or positions in the company, like health insurance or a retirement plan, HR will go over those with you as well. This is also when they will give you your schedule for the day and give you a list of all the projects that have been assigned to you.

4) In the fourth phase, we finally start to get comfortable with our new role. This is when we take on more responsibilities and interact with more people within the company. The fourth phase is where things begin to move along quickly: You start taking on more responsibility and interacting with more people within the company. You are now able to have weekly project meetings or one-on-one meetings with anyone in authority within the company.
