Why are Popcorn Ceilings Bad?

If you have moved into an older home, you will likely look up and notice that there is some texture to the ceiling in most rooms. This texture is something that was popular in the past, but these popcorn ceilings are going out of style and it may be in your best interest to consider popcorn ceiling removal in your home as well. But why are popcorn ceilings considered so bad?

First, many people like to work with these ceilings. They may not mind the appearance at all or they do not want to spend the money to get it fixed. This is also a good thing to add into the home to provide a unique look and can hide off some of the flaws in the ceiling so that they are less noticeable. For some homeowners, these ceilings are fine and they choose not to change them at all.

However, there are some things that make these a poor construction choice in the home and you may want to consider not having them in your home in the first place. Some of the negatives about these popcorn ceilings include:

  1. They are an old construction option and were used because they got the ceiling done quickly and did not cost a lot. While most home inspections can tell you if there is something wrong with the ceiling or not, this usually means that a popcorn ceiling is not going to be as high-quality as some of the other options.
  2. There is a slight risk of lead and asbestos in these ceilings based on the type of material that the contractor used. Since this is an older option used in homes, if you are moving into the home, you can get an inspection done to see whether this is a true concern or not. For most homes it is not and if it does show up, you do have some options before purchasing.
  3. The popcorn ceiling is known to dim the room compared to some of the other options.
  4. At some point, the popcorn part of the ceiling will start to peel off. When this happens, they are known to make a mess around the home and you will need to pick it up as it happens.

It is up to the homeowner to decide whether the popcorn ceiling bothers them or not. As long as you have tested the home for potential problems, you should be safe having it on the ceiling. But if you want a better quality ceiling and want to brighten up the room and avoid a mess, then popcorn ceiling removal is the right choice for you.
