Cleaning The Ears Of Pet Ferrets

There are times when pet ferrets’ ears become dirty.  For optimal health, it is essential that you keep your pet’s ears free of discharge and debris.

Below are some suggestions on how to clean your ferret’s ears:

  • Use a cleaning solution that is safe. Oti-clens™ is the recommended one here, but similar ear cleaners that are also safe might be prescribed by your vet.
  • Prior to starting the ear cleaning procedure, warm the gentle ferret-safe cleaner using warm water in a bowl. Cold droplets can be quite irritating for the pet. Their normal body temperature is about 101 to 103 degrees, therefore, dropping a 68 to 70-degree fluid might be uncomfortable.
  • Apply several droplets gently into each ear after warming the cleaning solution (but not hot). Do this while you scruff your ferret (grasp and firmly hold it by the fur on the back of its neck). Then, massage the spot behind its ear to allow the drops to penetrate and break apart wax and debris.  Your pet ferret will then shake its head in an attempt to clear its ears.  Loosen any outer ear debris with a cotton swab or ball.  Just be careful that you do not push the cotton swab so deep inside the ear or you may end up packing the earwax tighter against the animal’s eardrum or perhaps tear a hole through it and cause an ear infection.

Any sign of an ear problem exhibited by your pet should prompt a visit to your animal hospital Covington, GA.
