The mission of vocalist and conductor Devin Patrick Hughes is to elevate the human spirit throughout the entire orchestra, and share with all humanity the relevance of classical music. Devin Patrick Hughes was born and raised in Southern Colorado, where he performs with the Arapahoe Philharmonic & Boulder Symphony Orchestra and regularly hosts the One Symphony on YouTube. At various times he has also been a professional guitar player and singer/songwriter. Currently, he is the principal conductor of the jazz orchestra called the Denver Community Schools Organ Society.
The Denver Symphony is an organization that is housed in the Denver Arts Museum at the foot of Broadway Street. Its history can be traced back to 1869 when it was formed from several other amateur music groups. Among these groups were the Arapahoe College Boys' Choir and the Denver Men's Chorus. They later became the Denver Symphony. From its beginnings the Denver Symphony has received great criticism from the contemporary classical music community.
However, the Denver Symphony is today a world-class organization. It continues to perform a wide range of repertoire, including classical music. Its repertoire currently features works by composers such as Yo-Yo Ma, works by Yo-Yo Ma, Alexander Borodin, and John Corigliano. Furthermore, the Denver Symphony regularly commissions new compositions by young composers such as Michael Tilson.
Devin Patrick Hughes has many other achievements. He is currently a professor at the University of Denver. Previously, he was the Music Director and Music conductor of the International Youth Theatre Company in New York City, which he helped launch in 2021. This company performed works that were influenced by jazz, classical music, contemporary music, and even pop/rock. He is currently on tour with pianist-compositioner hybrids recruited from all over the world.
Additionally, he is currently the principal conductor of the drama department at the University of Colorado. He has also served as associate conductor for the ensemble for the past fifteen years. Although he is principal conductor, his band, The Great Big Wall Street Kids quartet, is the mainstay of the group. His other orchestral works consist of works with the Chicago Opera, St. Lawrence Singing Group, and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra.
At the International Youth Theatre Company he is principal conductor of the ensemble for the past sixteen years. During this period he has also conducted chamber music, solo piano music, and the ensemble as a concert orchestra. He is also the musical director and principal conductor of the award-winning production entitled Denver West High School Musical. This production is the winning of several awards, including best ensemble, outstanding program, and best scenic design. Additional credits include the production of the award-winning musical The Secret City as well as the movie Xanadu!
In addition to being a full-fledged musician with a master's degree in music, Devin Patrick Hughes also has an impressive resume. After obtaining a bachelor's degree in history at the University of Colorado, he began a ten-year term as a music professor at the University of New Mexico. While there he was responsible for the development of the Master of Arts Degree in Music, which is the only degree that can be awarded from UNM. While there he was also a professor at the College of Saint Ann. During this time he also served as an instructor at the Master of Fine Arts Degree in Music at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
