Five Mistakes Android App Developers must Avoid

Android has evolved to become one of the most beloved platforms among smartphone users globally. Android is free, customizable, and it is a rapidly growing platform with the highest market share. It works well not just on your phone or tablet, but also on your smartwatch, TV, cars, etc.

With Google Play, which already hosts over 2 million Android apps, the massive popularity of the OS further contributes to the increasing number of apps being released on a daily basis. Android apps are being developed all across the globe and developers face tremendous competition in this domain. The following list of the common mistakes can help Android app developers stay ahead of the curve:

  1. Not using fragments: As per the guidelines for Android app developers, fragments represent a behavior or a portion of a user interface in any activity. It helps in creating the multi-panel UI and is managed by the parent activity. If you will not use fragments, your app will launch different activities separately and will occupy more memory space. It can affect the performance of an app as well as of the user's device.
  2. Blocking the main thread: The primary purpose of the main thread is to keep the user interface responsive. Blocking the main thread can result in the “Application Not Responding” dialog box, which can be a major reason for app un-installations. It can be the reason for negative feedback. You can avoid blocking the main thread by using the background threads for network calls, bitmap loading, image processing, database querying, and SD reading/ writing.
  3. An all-rounder app: An individual can’t work efficiently in various diverse domains at once. Likewise, a single Android app can’t perform all functions simultaneously. So, don’t try to build an Android app that can perform dozens of functions. Keep it simple and functional.
  4. Improper usage of bitmaps: Users love content, especially when they are in the form of images. Images are more catchy as compared to the written content. But, they take a lot of memory. Since bitmap is the most common way used by Android app developers to display it on the screen and reduce memory usage with the time lag. However, improper usage of bitmaps can result in developing an inefficient mobile app.
  5. No gradual updates: Android is a platform that updates very quickly. So, building an app is not enough, you need to update it constantly to fix the bugs if any. Also, you need to feed the new features timely. By upgrading the app, Android app developers can create the visual design and functionalities in a seamless way, which is the most appealing to the target audience.
