The Daily 5 Literacy Framework – A Literacy Practice Guide for children

Are you parents of a toddler?

Are you looking for a Preschool that take initiative in building strong literacy skills in kids? Yes, developing strong literacy skills from an early age proves beneficial for students. However, executing an effective literacy program in school is a huge challenge. Nowadays, most of the classrooms are inclusive and they have different learning needs. Catering to these widely varying requirements of all students is a significant task.

The Daily 5 – is one of the most successful and popular literacy frameworks developed to help educators address this challenge. This framework was first proposed by Gail Boushey and John Moser in their book, ‘The Daily 5: Fostering Literacy Independence in the Elementary Grades.’

This approach offers students the following five different types of literary activities to work independently and confidently to achieve their personal literacy goals and becomes confident readers, writers, and speakers.

  • Read to Self
  • Work on Writing or Literacy Writing
  • Read to Someone
  • Listen to Reading
  • Word work

So, What is The Daily 5 literacy framework?

  • It is a literary structure that establishes an environment where students are engaged in independent reading and writing.
  • It is a routine and procedure that is transparent, practiced, and upheld.
  • It creates a structure that nurtures independence among the students.

The daily 5 – TheBest Literacy Practice Tips

Read to Self: In Preschool La Palma CA playschool, teachers do this activity in which students sit with books and read the same independently. They can pick any book of their choice and read quietly. Children may read books to get information or for pleasure. This may sound quite easy but creating an environment where students read independently and confidently with extended stamina needs slow and thoughtful execution.

Work on Writing: This is the second component of The Daily 5 where students should have the opportunity to explore different genres of writing. Many times teachers continue the writing style or process that is being taught in some separate writing class or workshop outside the framework. This activity will definitely develop children’s writing skills and help them become confident writers.

Read to Someone: This is one of the favorite components of The Daily 5 framework. In this activity, children get the opportunity to pair up and read a book of their choice to their partner. This is often called partner reading or buddy reading or read with a friend. This component provides kids the opportunity to read clearly to someone and learn something from their peers. As they read aloud a book to their partners, they learn to use the correct pronunciation and expression. Eventually, they become fluent readers.

Listen to Reading: This can take many different forms including listening to online audio stories. For young readers listening to someone reading fluently and confidently is quite beneficial. This helps them learn the correct pronunciation and expression. This activity also helps kids to develop their listening skills.

Word Work: This component mainly focuses on spelling and vocabulary by providing Preschool kids with learning manipulatives that would help them learn the language better. Students are encouraged to select from a variety of materials to develop their spelling skills and vocabulary. To practice word work kids can write or play any word-building game.

You would be surprised to know that The Daily 5 literacy framework produces productive, highly engaged learners who develop a true love for literacy and language. At home also you can apply this daily 5 framework to instill independence and confidence in your kids.
