How To Sit During Zen Meditation

How To Sit During Zen Meditation is a very interesting question. Some people seem to have this great dislike of sitting. They don't want to be there, they just want to lie there in whatever position they please thinking to themselves, "I have to get up and move some arms or legs or whatever so that I can move into some deeper consciousness." Sounds pretty Zen to me.

The real truth is, sitting is very important, and it's an important part of meditation. However, it's not the most important part of meditation, nor should it be your primary focus. Sure, sitting meditation can help you attain a more relaxed state of mind, but it doesn't give you any power over the way that your body feels during the time that you are meditating.

People think that sitting is a prerequisite for meditation, but that's just not true. If you aren't comfortable sitting while you are sitting, you might as well not do it. And if you are, you'll only end up resenting sitting.

So how should you approach sitting? The best way to start is to look at it from a logical point of view. If you look at it from your mind, you will realize that the mind isn't in the position to meditate. So, you should work with your mind while sitting on cushions or pillows. The idea is to let the mind drift into a state of relaxation and peace.

When your mind isn't wandering off into other thoughts, start to close your eyes. Visualize yourself in a dark room with black and white contrasting colors. Focus on seeing a spot in the center of the room and surrounding it with your eyes. It may take a few moments for the visualization to become real to you, but just make sure you stay focused on it. You can then move on to relaxing your body by massaging your body from your feet up to your head.

This may sound easy, but when you think about it, you'll find that you have to do a great deal of concentration to accomplish this task. So, how to sit during Zen meditation isn't as simple as it sounds. However, once you learn how to, you'll be able to successfully practice it anytime you want. Just don't forget about relaxation and meditation techniques as you progress through your practice.
