Differences Between 304-Grade and 316-Grade Stainless Steel Scrap

Used in the production of numerous pieces of equipment in both industrial and consumer-facing industries, stainless steel is an exceptionally popular and versatile ferrous metal. While it is possible to source new stainless steel, this can prove to be exceptionally costly and time-consuming for most companies. Therefore, to save time, money, and lessen their impact on the environment—most businesses opt for purchasing stainless steel scrap metal, and re-melting or re-using it for various needs. If this sounds like you, you may have a few questions when it comes to narrowing down your search. Generally speaking, there are two types of stainless steel scrap: 304-grade stainless steel scrap, and 316-stainless steel scrap. Here are the key differences:

304-Grade Stainless Steel Scrap

The most common form of stainless steel scrap, 304-grad stainless steel contains between 8-10% nickel, 18-20% chromium, along with trace amounts of carbon, silicon, and manganese. This type of stainless steel scrap is the most common grade chosen by many manufacturers, used for the production of items like stainless steel appliances, piping, commercial kitchen equipment, fasteners and more. Generally speaking, 304-grade stainless steel scrap is the type of stainless steel used in most consumer products.

316-Grade Stainless Steel Scrap

With a similar appearance and chemical structure to 304-grade stainless steel, it can be easy to confuse the two. The biggest differentiator for 316-grade stainless steel is the added concentration of molybdenum – at around 2-3%. This allows for enhance corrosion protection, best suited for equipment used in industrial settings, or areas where corrosion is common—such as marine and water equipment for salt water boats and chlorine pools, chemical processing equipment, and medical devices.
