Cost to paint a Fence

An ugly, unattractive, and a rooting fence is not only destructive for the curb appeal of your house but is irritating for your neighbors. Over time the appearance of your fence could be deteriorated because of radical temperature, rain, gleaming sunshine, and stormy winds. For reviving that old refreshing look you need to paint your fence occasionally. If you’re concerned about the cost to paint a fence, here is a guide.

Don't forget to read about difference between cement and concrete

There are many reasons why you should actually think about removing that old chipping paint and get it a new makeover. Proper upkeep and specifically painting would not only revitalize structural integrity of your fence but would also give it that crisp new finish. Undertaking a paint work for your fence is a time-consuming job so it should be carried out on correctly so that the work lasts as long as possible.

How much you should pay for a fence makeover?

The pricing for painting the fence varies based on its size i.e. length and height, quality of paint or stain, labor cost in your area, condition of existing fence, amount of required prep work, and material of the fence. In this guide, we are covering only the states of Australia – where the cost for painting a fence varies from $750 to $5,000.

For a generic estimate, if you have a wooden fence that is about 100 m long and 90 cm high you should be paying around $1,500 and it includes that prep work, materials, equipment, and cleaning, etc.

Labor Rate: you may ask a professional fence painter – how much he charges per hour? But after contacting three to four painters you would be surprised to get such varying hourly rates. It is actually not always right to go for the least as he would compromise on quality.

The hourly rates for fence painters in most states of Australia vary between $20 to $50. It includes their travel, set-up and clean-up time. The average labor rates for different states of Australia is as follows:

  • Brisbane or Queensland - $40 / hr
  • Victoria - $42 / hr
  • New South Wales (Sydney) - $47.50 / hr

Type of Finish: You can actually paint or stain your wooden fence as both can increase the lifespan of your fence. Depending on the amount of the finish required, the stain is always less expensive than paint but you may need it in more quantity as compared with the paint.

But obviously, the stain would last long so ultimately the things would be balanced for both.

If you’re short of time and want to get over the things quickly – you can opt to spray paint your fence. It’s a lot quicker and effective. The spray painters usually charge between $14 per square meter to $28 per square meter depending on the location and complexity of the job.

Amount of prep work: For a newly constructed fence you need a primer to take care of the tannins and other chemicals that may cause bleeding and premature paint damages. For an older fence, you may need to scrape and sand away the old peeling paint so that you can paint a fence the second time.

Size and Type of Fence: Size i.e. length and height is the most obvious factor affecting the cost. The more the size – the more is the time required to undertake the job and hence the cost.

For wooden picket fence, you may have to pay about $1,200 for a 75-meter long and 0.9 meters high. While for the privacy wooden fence of the same length you have to pay more because of its more height.

For a metal fence of the same length, you would be charged more i.e. about $2,400 to $4,800 depending on the condition, material type and the amount of prep work required. Yes this is pakka wood
