An ex-SpaceX engineer is working to electrify mobility in developing countries.

With his new firm, Power Global, former SpaceX engineer Porter Harris has transitioned from electrifying rockets to electrifying rickshaws in an effort to deliver efficient, emissions-free mobility to emerging economies.
Power Global, which officially launched today, is aiming for India's $16 billion three-wheeled transportation sector.

While electrification in developed areas is mostly focused on passenger and commercial vehicles, there is a concentrated effort in emerging economies to clean up motorcycles and three-wheelers.

They've become the preferred mode of transportation in countries where car ownership is minimal. Internal combustion engines or lead acid batteries are usually used to power them. In addition, neither power source is very environmentally friendly. Lead acid batteries must be replaced every six to eight months and are extremely dangerous... whereas fossil fuels are a major driver to global warming.

This is where Power Global comes in. It's providing three-wheeler owners a subscription service that allows them to change from lead acid batteries or internal combustion engines to its swappable battery system.

The eZee, the company's initial product, is a light car battery that can be swapped out. Harris and Pankaj Dubey, a former Yamaha Motors and Polaris Inc. executive, view the company's purpose as bringing electric vehicles and renewable energy goods to global markets that have been left behind in the world's movement toward sustainable mobility.

In a recent interview with TechCrunch, Harris revealed that Power Global plans to expand its services beyond New Delhi, with the goal of establishing a kiosk every three kilometres.

Drivers will be able to check how many kilometres they've driven, their current battery level, and where they can find a charging station using an app developed by the firm.

Mobility solutions are also only a gateway to a wider range of energy services. In order to supply rural electrification, plans are in the works to add solar panels to the battery charging stations.

The lithium ion batteries used by the company are expected to endure for about five years before being recycled.

Right now, Power Global is focusing on battery production. According to TechCrunch, the goal is to have a factory up and operating that can create about one gigawatt hour of batteries (about 10,000 Model S packs).

The interchangeable eZee battery will be available early next year, with retrofit services following later.

"Do we really need another solution for the world's top ten percent?" "No, we don't," Harris said in an interview with TechCrunch. "Let's concentrate on the other 90% of the globe and make a difference."

Pre-orders for the company's swappable batteries are presently being accepted.

In a statement, Dubey, co-founder and CEO of Power Global's India affiliate, said, "We are on a mission to improve access to clean energy solutions in India and other emerging countries by sharing our collective years of expertise in bringing inexpensive battery technology to market." "While the eZeeTM will breathe new life into light mobility vehicles, it also represents a way to support growing regional environmental goals while also helping to build local economies through direct and indirect job creation..."

Power Global will unveil its first line of Retrofit Kits to convert diesel- and petrol-fueled auto rickshaws into zero-emissions electric vehicles following the debut of the eZeeTM battery module. Future product lines will be powered by the swappable eZeeTM battery module, which will include applications for second-life stationary storage and the automotive industries.
