Why are smart schools becoming a necessity these days?

Smart school was a concept that was not widely heard in the education space before the pandemic wreaked havoc on the planet. However, its mushrooming post-pandemic saw an all-time high. Technology for schools became the “new normal”, and the myth around it finally started to wear off. Schools since time immemorial have been following redundant practices because of which the sector crashed with the COVID-19 crisis. Tech-enabled schools remained undisrupted. But, how did these schools survive the crisis? Let us have a look:

  •   The most significant benefit of a smart classroom is that learning happens seamlessly, irrespective of the status of the schools. The ongoing times are incredibly unpredictable, and hence schools need to run smoothly without any disruption to help prevent the learning loss of children.
  •  Tech-enabled schools also give a dedicated app for every stakeholder that makes learning in all circumstances possible and effective. Through this app, staying in touch becomes more accessible, and learning becomes seamless.
  •   Tech-supported schools aid teachers with requisite tools to help them deliver effective lectures.  When teachers have ample resources to teach from, the learning outcomes automatically get enhanced.
  •   Tech-enabled schools are mostly profitable compared to traditional schools as parents are sure about the quality of education and that the education will stay unhampered in all circumstances.
  •   Smart schools also bring the cost of running the school down substantially. This is because most schools' functioning gets automated with smart technology, and hence, the need for manual labour automatically gets reduced, saving cost.
  •   A student can learn dynamically in a tech-enabled school. They are not restricted to learning from textbooks; instead, they can explore other engaging resources available on the LMS or apps to learn better and retain the information for a longer period.

The ongoing times have reminded the school fraternity about the requisite changes in the sector that are long pending. Also, the skills imparted to the current generation will go redundant in the upcoming times. On the other hand, tech-supported education will train students in skills and ready them for future jobs. Education, especially in India, has always been a low experiment sector; however, the sector evolved rapidly with the pandemic. The COVID-crisis has allowed everyone to better their business models to withstand any crisis in the future. It’s been an eye-opener for many businesses; however, for the education sector, it's peculiarly essential. According to a report by UNESCO, “A variety of studies have evaluated the impact of eLearning and concluded that—supported by holistic approaches that include appropriate policies, infrastructure, professional development, and curricula—eLearning can help produce positive outcomes.”

Also, there’s a big gap in the way technology gets deployed in bigger and smaller cities. Schools in smaller cities do not have enough mediums to leverage technology, and thus, they remain behind other schools that are thriving owing to tech support. However, fortunately, today, many ed-tech companies are offering their services to schools not just in bigger cities but smaller ones as well. For a country to prosper at a global level, students must get an opportunity to excel irrespective of their location. The role of ed-tech companies is to empower students, teachers, owners and parents with the apt tools so that learning becomes meaningful. Also, these companies are revolutionising education in multiple ways. They have shaken the traditional mode of learning and have presented an opportunity to learn more efficiently with the help of technology. The change in the sector is imminent, it’s up to the education industry to make the most of this revolution.
