A Critical Guide To AWS Direct Connect

AWS Direct Connect is a cloud-based utility that connects your network directly to Amazon Web Services (AWS), bypassing the internet to provide more consistent, lower-latency performance.

When building a new connection, you can choose between a hosted connection offered by an AWS Direct in Connect Delivery Partner and a dedicated connection supplied by AWS. Both of these can be deployed at over 100 AWS Direct Connect locations worldwide.

How Does AWS Direct Connect Work?

AWS Direct Connect uses a regular Ethernet fibre-optic cable to connect your internal network to an AWS Direct Connect facility. The line is connected to your router on one end and an AWS Direct Connect router on the other.

With this connection, you can construct virtual interfaces to public AWS services or Amazon VPC without going via internet service providers. AWS Direct Connect locations provide you access to AWS in the region with which they're linked.

To access public AWS services in all other general Regions, you can use a single connection in a public Region or AWS GovCloud.

Key Components

For AWS Direct Connect, you'll need the following critical components:

Connections: To build a network connection from your premises to an AWS Region, create a connection at an AWS Direct Connect location. See AWS Direct Connect Connections for further details.

Interfaces that are virtual: To gain access to AWS services, create a virtual interface. Access to public services like Amazon S3 is made possible by a virtual public interface. Your VPC can be accessed over a private virtual interface. See AWS Direct Connect virtual interfaces and Prerequisites for virtual interfaces for further information.

How is it Beneficial?

AWS Direct Connect makes it simple to connect an on-premises network to one or more VPCs in the same region via a dedicated connection. You can build private connectivity between AWS and your data centre, office, or colocation environment using private VIF on AWS Direct Connect.

Compared to internet-based connections, AWS Direct Connect can save network expenses, boost bandwidth throughput, and deliver a more consistent network experience.

What Can AWS Direct Connect Do For You?

Construct hybrid networks: To deploy AWS services anywhere—in your data centre, near significant metro regions, or in any AWS Region—connect your AWS and on-premises networks.

Real-time applications with high performance: Bypass the internet totally to deliver a more consistent low-latency network experience for phone, video, and real-time performance applications.

Organize large amounts of data: For real-time analysis, rapid data backup, or broadcast media processing, ensure seamless and reliable data transfers at a large scale—multiple terabytes or even petabytes.

Closing thoughts

If your AWS setup is plagued by high bandwidth prices or poor network performance, consider switching to AWS Direct Connect.

It enables you to create private connections between AWS and your data centre, office, or colocation environment. This results in a more consistent network experience than Internet-based connections.
