North America

In Mexico and Puerto Rico, people throw pails of water out their windows to symbolically sweep out the evil spirits and the passing year. They also clean their surroundings with a goal to start the new year on a fresh slate. While Mexicans toss coins to the ground and sweep them back into their houses for a prosperous future, Puerto Ricans sprinkle sugar outside their house. Some of their traditional foods are served including pasteles, roasted pig, arroz con gandules, coquito and rice pudding.

South America

When the new year arrives, Ecuadorians celebrate the annual Anos Viejos by burning scarecrows at midnight. These scarecrows symbolise the public figures who wronged the world in the previous year. They also burn photographs from the previous year in the name of starting fresh. Coming down to Brazil, people celebrate the New Year’s Eve by enjoying the fireworks on Copacabana beach, wearing white clothes and eating lentils, which signify wealth. In Peru, people eat grapes and their traditional food to celebrate the onset of a new year. Another interesting custom of the Peruvians is putting three potatoes—one peeled, one partially peeled and the other kept as it is—and picking one potato at midnight while being blindfolded. It is believed that your prosperity will depend on how much skin is present on the potato you pick. New Year’s Eve in Chile is celebrated to honor the dearly departed, where the bereaved families spend the night at the cemetery close to their deceased loved ones. However at midnight, they celebrate with fireworks and wear certain colours that indicate hope.
