Pets And Ticks

Your being careful will not matter, ticks can find ways to get onto your pet since they are quite adapted at concealing themselves in various environments, identifying nearby hosts then attaching themselves to them. But ticks can be prevented by refraining from going to marginal shrubs and forests or areas that have long grass.

If you find ticks around the home, try creating a barrier by cutting a band of vegetation that stops short between the surrounding areas and your lawn. You can also try using wood chips and mulch several feet wide for a vegetation-free band.

Always check yourself and your pet for ticks after returning from places where exposure is possible. Do wear appropriate clothes like boots and long pants whenever possible.

As you check, note that ticks could be as big as beans when engorged, or as tiny as pencil points, depending on what stage of life they are in and their species. If you see ticks on your pet’s fur that have not attached themselves yet, pick or brush them off and destroy them.

If you notice any signs of infection, parasites, and other skin and hair coat problems, it is a good idea to make an appointment with your veterinarian Sherman Oaks, CA so your pet can undergo a thorough checkup.
