How To Whiten Your Yellow Pillows?

According to research, you need to replace your pillows once every two years only. But most of us do not wait that long to do so. The yellow stains that get stuck to our clear white pillows can cause most of us to throw away the pillows much sooner. But what if you can recover your pillows from those stubborn stains? That would be awesome, right! That is exactly what we are going to discuss today. We will have a closer look at the major reasons behind your pillows turning yellow, effective tips on getting rid of the stains, and finally the way to maintain the good looks of your pillows. So, let’s get started.

How Do They Get Stained In The First Place?

We spend around 6 to 8 hours in our bed, every night (or at least that’s how much sleep we must get to function properly). This means that our pillows come in direct contact with sweat, dead cells, drool and the natural oils produced by our body. Add makeup to the list if you are someone who forgets to take it off before bed. We often give more importance to our pillowcases than to our pillows. And by the time we notice how dirty our pillow has gotten over time, it would have been too late. But this need not be the case now. Let us look at some of the effective DIY tips that can get your pillows back to their snowy white color.

The Washing Machine Technique

Before getting into the actual cleaning process, make it a point to check the labels, if any, in your pillow. Depending on the type of pillow, you can either wash it as a whole (like the polyester pillows) or just spot-treat the stains (especially when it comes to the memory foam ones). Let us look at how to whiten your pillows while washing them as a whole, in a washing machine:

Step 1: Before putting the pillow inside the washer, it is crucial to treat the stains properly. Choose your favorite stain remover, follow the instructions and apply it to the stained areas. You can then let it sit for about 20 minutes before going into the next step. This helps loosen up the stains making them easy to come out.

Step 2: The next thing to do is soak the pillows in hot water. If your washing machine is a top-load one, you can easily fill it up with the hot water that comes out from your tap. Then let the pillows soak in it. Always make sure to add two pillows at a time into the washer to maintain its balance.

Step 3: While the pillows soak in the hot water, take a large pot and boil some water. Pour in one cup of powdered laundry detergent, half a cup of borax, and one cup of powdered automatic dishwasher detergent. Mix it properly and pour it into your washer where the pillows are soaking. You can add in one cup of bleach to it after this and let it all work its magic on your pillows.

Step 4: Now is the time for the washer to do its work. Launder the pillows using the hot wash cycle and during the last cycle, pour in one cup of white vinegar. This will make sure that the bleach and the vinegar do not mix with each other.

Step 5: Put the pillows in the dryer and dry them in medium heat. If it is synthetic pillows that you are using, make sure to put them in low heat. Your pillows will look as good as new.

The Hand Washing Technique

If it is clearly mentioned somewhere in your pillows that they have to be hand-washed, then make sure to not use the above-given technique. Fill a big tub with hot water (not boiling) and add almost a quarter cup of laundry detergent to it. Knead it lightly to get the stains out of it and then show the pillow under cold, running water to get the detergent and stains out of it. If your pillow has super stubborn stains in it, you can add in a quarter cup of borax or a quarter cup of bleach to it as well. You can gently squeeze out the water from the pillows and let them air dry. Make sure to flip them every once in a while for even drying.

How To Maintain Your White Pillows?

Now that your pillows are all white and perfect, it is important to make sure that they also stay clean. Use pillowcases as well as pillow protectors. Also, give your pillows an occasional clean to prevent them from getting badly stained. You can also hire mattress cleaners to deep clean your mattress and pillows, for a more long-lasting result.
