What is Tap and Pay (NFC)?

The NFC standard (Near Field Communication) allows smartphones and similar devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into proximity, usually no more than a few inches. In the case of mobile payments, this usually happens when a user taps their smartphone on a point-of-sale terminal at a store. This lets the user instantly transfer information, such as debit and credit card details.

Android Beam is a feature on some NFC-enabled Android phones that allows for wireless sharing of web pages, apps, contacts, music, videos between supported devices. An Android user simply selects the items to share and then touches another NFC-enabled Android phone to send it. The receiving device can then review the shared items.

Tap and Pay is a mobile payment service that allows users to make payments using their NFC-enabled Android phones at points of sale, similar to how you use your debit or credit card. In order for Tap and Pay to work, both the NFC-enabled phone and the point of sale terminal must be able to read the NFC chip.

Ways to use Tap and Pay on your Android phone:

  1. Online Shopping at Shopify stores
  2. Shopify merchants can now offer their customers the option to pay with a tap of their NFC-enabled Android phones via the Shopify Mobile Card Reader app, developed by Square Inc. This allows businesses to access more sales opportunities by accepting secure contactless payments like Tap and Pay.
  3. NFC-enabled Android phones can be used for parking meters, transit fare payment systems, event ticketing machines by tapping them on the point of sale terminals to pay instantly, with no need to carry cash or credit cards. It is important that both your phone and the terminal are able to read NFC tags.
  4. Tap and Pay can be used for in-app payments on your Android phone, by displaying the payment interface after tapping on a “Buy” button on your screen. This new feature provides an easier way for users to complete purchases while providing merchants with higher security compared to traditional credit card transactions.
  5. Some Android phones have a built-in NFC chip that can be used directly for Tap and Pay without the need to download any apps. For example, Samsung Galaxy S3 has an NFC chip built in. Similar functionality may be available on other Android models from different manufacturers as well, regardless of operating system versions. Check your phone’s user manual for more information on your specific device.
  6. Most Android phones that support NFC will work with Shopify’s Mobile Card Reader app, known as the Square Stand . This free app can be downloaded from Google Play or the Apple App Store (Square Register) and yields similar results to tap-to-pay terminals.
  7. Tap and Pay functionality may be built into your NFC-enabled Android phone depending on the model or OS version, so please refer to your user manual for more information on how it works with Shopify POS.

What are the benefits of using Tap and Pay?

* Customers can pay faster because no cash or credit cards are needed

* Merchants will have higher sales because customers can shop anywhere, anytime

* The transaction is secure because it uses the same encrypted technology as mobile banking apps

How does Tap and Pay work on Shopify POS?

When you open the Shopify POS app, you will see a barcode at the bottom of the screen.

  • The barcode will either have a credit card number displayed above it, or a “Tap to Pay” message. In order for Tap and Pay to work on your Android phone, both the NFC-enabled phone and the point of sale terminal must be able to read NFC tags. If you see a credit card number, you can save it to your phone using a Shopify POS receipt printer.
  • If you see the “Tap to Pay” message above the barcode, then NFC-enabled functionality has been enabled on your Android phone and all that is needed is the tap of another NFC-enabled Android phone against it for payments to be made. You can test this out in the Shopify POS app by tapping your phone against another NFC-enabled Android phone, or by using a Tap and Pay enabled terminal at a local store.
  • Some Android phones have a built-in NFC chip that can be used directly for Tap and Pay without the need to download any apps.
  • You can click on the barcode or tap to pay message in order to review the store’s location and/or phone number for future use.
