Disadvantages of Using Aversive Training to Your Dogs

Like all other things, aversive training also has some disadvantages. Here are some things you should consider to avoid the negative effects of aversive training:

●     The more you use them, the less it becomes effective. For example, if you keep spraying your dogs to control their behavior, after some time, they get used to this. They will no longer be startled when you introduce this to them. Remember not to overuse aversives.

●     Dogs don’t respond to some aversives if they don’t come from you. For instance, they will successfully respond when you’re the one spraying them with water. So if you’re not around, they won’t behave as expected.

●     Never use aversive training on fearful dogs. Some dogs are highly sensitive to some stimuli. For them, the effect of the aversive training will be excessive, which is still not ideal. Instead, this will damage their trust in you and result in other unwanted changes in behavior.

●     As much as you could, never correlated aversive training with aggression. Sometimes, it can be viewed as something aggressive to dogs. You must be careful not to cross the line. For example, if you hit your dogs, they might bite, snap, or growl. So even the smallest hint of aggression will trigger to respond this way. This defeats the purpose of aversive training in the first place.
