What is a Transponder Key?

Transponder is short for transmitter and responder. Therefore, transponder keys contain an electronic microchip built into the head by the manufacturer. Microchip is designed to transmit low-level signals to remote receivers installed in the car. Each chip built into the key has a unique serial number that must be recognized by the car's RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) before it can be unlocked or started.

Almost all car manufacturers today have adopted the use of transponder keys to reduce auto thefts. And the good news is that since its introduction by GM on the 1985 Corvette car model, car thefts have dropped drastically. This is why at Lok Out Shop, we recommend the use of a transponder key as central to every car security system.

Why transponder key is preferred and more secure

Transponder keys are designed to use a digital serial number, which is virtually unique to unlock each car. This is the reason why it provides a high level of protection for the vehicles. With the use of a transponder key, you will have the comfort that your car is virtually secure as it will be difficult for thieves to 'hot wire' or break your vehicle's ignition.

When compared with a traditional key that has some standard cut combinations that the thief can manipulate, it is highly preferred because without the car receiving the correct signal, it will not open. Therefore, it is nearly impossible for someone else's transponder key or after-market copy without the exact digital ID to open your car.

How to Know If You Have Transponder Key

Identify the two key parts of your key, the blade and bow - which is a flattened piece that can be compared to the head of the key. If the bow is covered or coated with several layers of tin foil or a rubber shell which is usually black, then there is every chance that you have a transponder key.

Another way to make sure you have a transponder key is by trying to open the head to look for the chip that's built inside. However, you need to be extremely careful not to touch or damage the chip.

You can also look up the model of your car on the Internet, and of course, the manufacturer will state whether the key is a transponder in the security section.
