Corrosion Resistant Coatings and Rust

In the world of metal finishing, a lot of products are referred to as corrosion resistant coatings. Many of these same products are also referred to as anti rust coatings. This may seem redundant to those who are unfamiliar with the more technical aspects of the term corrosion, as corrosion and rust are often conflated. However, ‘corrosion resistant coating” does not necessarily mean the exact same thing as “anti rust coating”. There is actually a reason for the differentiation.

To understand the difference between corrosion resistant coatings and anti rust coatings, you must first understand the difference between corrosion and rust. Corrosion is the name of the process by which certain materials, including but not limited to various types of metals, wood, ceramic, and polymers, become deteriorated as a result of being exposed to air or certain chemicals.

The term rust is used to refer to a specific type of corrosion that occurs when a surface that is made of iron or an iron alloy is exposed to a combination of air and moisture that causes deterioration of the affected material and produces iron oxide. Rust is easily recognizable because of its distinctive reddish orange-brown coloring.

In short, all rust is a form of corrosion, but not all corrosion is rust. Therefore, if a product is advertised as a corrosion resistant coating, there is a good chance that it is also an anti rust coating, but if a product is advertised specifically as an anti rust coating, and not as a corrosion resistant coating, it is possible that the product will not be effective against all forms of corrosion. This may be the case for a product that is specifically designed for coating iron and iron alloys, and is not well suited for coating ceramics or polymers.

Overall, however, it is likely safe to assume that most corrosion resistant coatings are also rust resistant, and vice versa.
