Introduction to the National Professional Practice Exam or (NPPE):

The NPPE or National Professional Practice Examination is an online exam on ethics, three-hour, closed, professional practice, engineering law, and professional responsibility. An eligible candidate may write the NPPE at any time (within the given time limit by PEO), as they have 48 months of engineering working experience that is necessary for the engineering licensee. For the reduction of licensure time, the candidate is motivated to write the NPPE early in the time limit given by Professional Engineers Ontario.

The NPPE is conducted five times a year: April, February, June, September, and November. The examination is done using remote proctoring, meaning candidates will write the exam from their homes.

Special accommodations can be for the ones having a demonstrated need. One should contact the PEO Exam Centre to know more about making special accommodation requests.

The Exam Centre of PEO will send the candidates a registration notice when they are eligible to write the exam.

The NPPE confirms knowledge of professionalism, ethics, and l, aw. 12 engineering and geoscience self-regulatory organizations utilize the NPPE in Canada. The NPPE strictly adheres to all related criteria detailed in the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing to make sure that the exam program is trustworthy, valid,d and fair (psychometrically defensible).

Writing the NPPE:

The NPPE has 120 multiple-choice questions that are based on 6 subject areas. 10 of them are PEO-specific and related to the Professional Engineers Act, Regulations 941 and 260/08, and Ontario-oriented practice issues.

The remainder is based on information in the textbooks and other resources. You get 3 hours to complete the exam. Despite NPPE containing specialized vocabulary and terms, the exam can’t function as a test for English language proficiency. Furthermore, it is verified regularly (with standard readability measures) to work at a readability level of nearly grade 10.

3 Steps for the NPPE:

1.   You need to write a PEO license application to Professional Engineers Ontario. When PEO receives your application with the payment, you will be provided with a PEO file number.

2.   Wait. 2 months before the date of the next available exam, PEO’s Exam Centre will send all qualified NPPE applicants a registration mail having information on how to register to write the exam.

3.   Qualified NPPE applicants willing to write the exam at the next available sitting need to register and submit payment as per the instructions given in the registration mail. If you do not receive your registration mail nearly two months before the sitting in question, you should reach the Exam Centre.
