How Do I Become a Foster Parent?

Thousands of children are removed from their homes each day who need a foster care in Michigan. They need a safe and nurturing environment to live in until they can be reunited with their family. When you register as a foster parent, you will be taking care of vulnerable children who need a loving home.

If you want to enroll as a foster parent, here are the steps you need to take.

Find an Agency

The first step of becoming a foster parent is to find an agency that is suitable for you. You can call foster care navigators, who are experienced foster parents, to ask questions. They will help you find the right agency for you.

Attend Orientation

During orientation, you will receive in-depth information about what to expect as a foster parent. You will be given all the guidelines and information about the program. The agency staff will answer all your questions and help you understand the process of training, paperwork, background checks, etc.

Foster Care Application

You will receive the application paperwork during your orientation meeting. You can fill out the application and turn it in during orientation or afterward. You will now be enrolled with the agency to become a foster parent. The agency will notify the state of Michigan that you have begun the process of becoming a licensed foster parent.

Attend Training

You must attend PRIDE (Parent Resources for Information Development and Education) training before you can become a licensed foster parent. You need to complete 12 hours of PRIDE training after enrolling with the agency. Once you have received your license, you must complete 12 more hours of PRIDE training.

Home Evaluation

The final step is a home study or home evaluation. The home evaluation is done through several home visits. The staff will do a complete assessment of your home and family members to gather information about past relationships, substance abuse, criminal history, parenting style, etc. This home study is done for two reasons. Firstly, to see if the foster parent is fit to take care of a child and determine which type of child to place with the parent.

To be concluded

After the home study, you will receive your license after a few days. Foster parents are expected to be willing to work with the biological parents and be supportive of the process of the child’s safe return home.

If the child cannot return home safely, the foster parents may be asked to adopt the child, which the foster parents should be ready to do.

If you want to enroll as a foster parent in Michigan, contact Holy Cross Services, a non-profit that helps thousands of children find foster homes each year. They also run a homeless shelter in Michigan.
