The Most Effective Way To Replace An Electric Plug Socket

You'd be shocked how many people nowadays don't know how to replace a plug socket. Paying a professional electrician of test and tag services Sydney to conduct the task for you is clearly the superior option for getting it done properly! If you don't want to hire one, or anybody else for that matter, you can change an electric plug outlet on your own. It's a small annoyance in the broad scheme of things. However, if not handled properly, that minor job might turn into a massive disaster because fiddling with electricity can be quite deadly. Here is a step-by-step tutorial on replacing an electrical plug socket safely.

Remember that the most important concern here is safety. Before you do anything else, make sure the electricity to the socket you're going to replace is turned off. Turn off the breaker that supplies power to that specific socket in your main circuit breaker box. If your main breaker box is properly labelled, you can only do this and select the correct breaker; otherwise, if you don't want to test each breaker until you find the right one, you'll have to turn off all of the breakers to be sure. Now check for electricity at the socket in question.

To check if the power is still on, plug-in electrical equipment such as a vacuum cleaner or use a multi-tester if you have one. Multi-testers come with user instructions so that anyone may use them.

Continue only after you're certain there isn't any power to the socket you're going to operate with. Remove the faceplate by unscrewing the screws holding it in place with a screwdriver and pulling it off. Remove the screws that connect the socket to the receptacle box. Drag the socket out of the receptacle box as far as it will go, being careful not to contact any wires.

Pay close attention to where the wires are connected to your socket now, because you'll need to rejoin them in the same way in the new socket later. Two or three wires will be hooked to your socket, and they will most likely be colour coded. The brown cable is for live power, while the other two are for neutral and ground power. You won't have to worry about the colours if you wire them up in the same way. That is extremely significant. If you get stuck, a multi-tester will come in handy.

Unplug the old socket and untangle the wires. Check your notes and reconnect the wires to the terminals of the brand new socket. Tighten all of the screws and double-check that no wires of different colours are touching. Push the socket into the receptacle box and secure it with the screws you removed earlier once all the wires are properly secured. The faceplate should then be replaced. To test the new socket, turn on all the breakers in the main breaker box and plug an electrical item of equipment into it.

Congratulations. You've just learned how to swap an electrical plug socket successfully.
