Requirements Vs Practical Installation for Fire Safe Façade

Façades during the olden days were only an architectural building cover. Those beautiful architectural buildings had such chemical characteristics which contributed in intensifying and fast spreading of external fires. Such characteristics of those façade elements created a necessity for designing the fire-safe façade.

But nowadays facades are designed considering importance of limiting external fire propagation. Materials in external façade are chosen after considering their fire performance characteristics. Firestop System are implemented to achieve minimal fire spread. Various fire tests are done according to various standards to know characteristics such as ‘Reaction to ’ and ‘Resistance to fire’ of materials.

What is Fire rating and fire retardance? Well, A ‘Fire-rated’’ also known as ‘Fire Resistance Rated’’ product will have the ability to completely resist the fire for some period of time. Whereas a ‘Fire Retardant’ product will only have the tendency to slow down or stop the spread of fire or to reduce the intensity of the fire. Both are equally important in a building.

The adverse effects that were felt on recent fires pushed the engineering community to design fire-safe façades whereas the practical installation of the designed façade at project sites is still under the improvisation stage. Read the article to know poor installation practices and how to overcome them.
