What is Form W-2: Income Tax Statement?

Form W-2, also known as the Income Tax Statement, is a document that an employer must submit to each employee and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at the end of the year. W-2 reports the annual salaries of employees and the amount of tax deducted. A W-2 employee is a person whose employer deducts taxes from his or her income and submits this information to the government.


Who Submits Form W-2: Income Tax Statement?

The employer is legally required to submit a W-2 form to all employees who have paid a salary, salary, or other form of compensation. This does not include contracted or self-employed employees, who submit taxes in various forms. Employer must submit employee form W-2 by Jan. 31 or earlier each year, so that the employee has sufficient time to pay income tax before the deadline (which is April 15 for many years) .

Employers must also use W-2 forms to report Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) taxes to their employees throughout the year. Tax documents were filed last year. For example, if you receive a W-2 form in January 2022 it shows the amount you have earned in 2021.


How to Apply Form W-2: Income Tax Statement

If you are a company employee and will receive a W-2 of your income tax, it will be automatically sent to you each year by your employer. Your employer will also send you a copy of your W-2 with the IRS.

The information provided on Form W-4 (or sometimes Form W-9) when you are first hired provides the information your company needs to track earnings, tax deductions, employer benefits, and pre-tax contributions on items such as 401 (k) retirement plan. Form W-4 tells the employer the amount to be deducted from the employee's income based on the person's marital status, the amount of benefits and dependents, and other factors.

When preparing your income tax, you will need to enter your w2 online data into each 1040 tax form, either manually or electronically. Online tax preparation software now allows you to directly import information from your W-2 to your payment provider in most cases


What Information Includes Form W-2: Income Tax Statement?

Every W-2 has the same fields, regardless of employer. The W-2 forms are divided into regional and district levels as employees are required to file taxes at both levels. Some fields provide employer information, including Employer Identification Number (EIN) (federal) and state employer ID number. The remaining fields are usually employee income details from the previous year.

The employee's total annual salary from the employer is recorded, together with the tax deduction for the employee's income tax, divided into corporate income tax deduction, Social Security tax, and more. If the employee re-works the tips, the field indicates how much of the tips the employee received per year.

If you are working on multiple W-2 providers, you need to install each one separately.

When an employee completes a tax return, the tax deduction based on the W-2 form is deducted from its total tax liability. If more tax is withheld than the debtor, a refund will be issued.

The IRS also uses Form W-2 to track employee income and tax liability. If the income reported in employee taxes does not match the income reported in Form W-2, the IRS may assess the taxpayer. However, taxpayers are required to report all earnings, salaries, and tip income even if that income is not reported in W-2.


How Can I Get My W-2?

Your employer is required to provide you with copies of your W-2 each year if you qualify. The deadline for companies to submit this form is usually in late January or early February following the recent tax year. W-2s may be mailed as hard copy or made available online in electronic form, either directly by the employer or by their lead provider.


How Much Money Do You Need To Get W-2?

Generally, you will receive a W-2 from the employer if you earn at least $ 600 in a given year. You will get W-2 if you have tax deductions to get any money from your employer.3 Note that if you were a contractor and not a worker, you would probably get 1099 instead of W-2.
