If you are a regular follower of the latest updates from IT sectors, then two words - artificial intelligence and cognitive computing maybe your mouth of your words. Even though verbs like deep learning, machine learning, cognitive computing, neural networking are used interchangeably, there is a difference between them all. To understand what is the difference, read out the further content.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

There may not be perhaps any sector left where AI has not entered or transformed the core business processes. AI can be depicted as a simulation of the human intelligence process that is exhibited by machines through a well-defined set of theories and algorithms. Artificial intelligence includes various processes like:

·       Learning

·       Reasoning

·       Self-correction

What is cognitive computing?

Cognitive computing is a separate technology that assists to humans to perform functionalities. Cognitive computing incomparisonto AI focuses on reasoning and understanding of human cognition, judgment analogy at a higher level. So, cognitive computing is more into:

·       attentive on reasoning and understanding at advanced levels.

·       Understanding and simulating human behaviour.

Differences between artificial intelligence and cognitive computing

Reading definitions of both terms, we must have cleared what exactly artificial intelligence and cognitive computing are. Now, we must know the difference between these two, to make the picture clear.

Mimicking of human process

Artificial intelligence does not mimic human thoughts and processes but it provides a comprehensive solution through a best possible algorithm.

Cognitive computing concentrates on mimicking human behaviour and reasoning processes to solve the problem.

Innovative way to solve the problem

Artificial intelligence takes a different perspective to view a problem and thus seeks new ways to find out solutions for solving them. Artificial intelligence augments human thinking, by reflecting the reality to solve the problem.

On the other hand, cognitive computing just replicates the human process of problem-solving. So, only an automated version of the human process can be seen in cognitive computing.

Freedom of decision-making

Artificial intelligence can take independent decisions on its own while minimizing the role of human intervention.

Cognitive computing does not have that much potential to make decisions. It can simply act as an information provider so that the decision-making process is simple for humans.

Issue with jobs

As artificial intelligence has the capability to replace humans along with unbiased decision-making, people may have fear of losing jobs due to more exposure to artificial intelligence in any sector. AI along with cognitive computing has the power of elimination of need for humans in any well-structured business process.

This will not happen with cognitive computing. As cognitive computing alone cannot cause a significant impact on people’s job security.

Result accuracy

Artificial intelligence implementation is based on a thorough algorithm so we can expect highly accurate results.

Cognitive computing on the other hand is a subset of AI, can only provide required information and can replicate the human process of problem-solving. That implies less accurate results or the same results with an automated version of processes carried by humans.

Real-life examples

Both technologies are widely used in the real-world to solve different complex problems. Even the terms look the same, the real-world applications of artificial intelligence and cognitive computing are different from each other. Artificial intelligence concentrates on the service sector such as healthcare, customer care, aviation, transport and logistics. In the manufacturing and procurement sector, AI and its applications are used for predictive analysis purposes. In the banking sector, AI is used for fraud detection.

On the other hand, cognitive computing mainly focuses on analysis-based industries like finance, marketing. The technology is widely used in the areas where there is a need for decision-improvement, cost reduction by implementing the techniques like NLP. One can find the use of cognitive computing in the field of speech recognition, behaviour recommendations, risk assessments, government sector.

For beginners, the words artificial intelligence and cognitive computing are replacements for each other. Both depict computers will do the tasks that were previously performed by humans. By knowing the difference between these two terms, will help to understand the future of work. Understand and feel free to use the more apt technology that will reduce your manual efforts and redefine the processes to have better results. Identify the correct approach and dream of a better and promising future!
