Acrolein; Used As A Biocide to Control Plants, Algae, Fungi, Slime, and Microorganisms

Acrolein (Propenal) is the simplest unsaturated aldehyde. It is a colorless liquid with a piercing, acrid smell. Acrolein is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of acrylic acid and as a biocide. It may be formed from the breakdown of certain pollutants in outdoor air or from the burning of organic matter including tobacco, or fuels such as gasoline or oil. Acrolein is widely used to make acrylic acid. Acrolein is also used to control plant and algae growth in irrigation canals. It is also used to control or kills bacteria and microorganisms in oil wells, cooling-water towers, liquid hydrocarbon fuels, and water treatment ponds. Acrolein is itself a pesticide and is added to irrigation canals and the water supplies to control underwater plant, algae, and slime growth.

Acrolein is a colorless liquid with an unpleasant acrid smell. It is produced by the breakdown of glycerol, which is the main constituent of fat. Acrolein acrid aroma makes it one of the most obnoxious gases in the air. It is one of the primary reasons why a burnt-fat smell is so pervasive. Acrolein is used to produce various chemicals or pesticides. It is used as an algicide and aquatic herbicide in irrigation canals, as a microbiocide in oil wells, and as a slimicide in manufacturing of paper. Acrolein is also used in the manufacture of colloidal metals and in military poison gas mixtures. It can also be found in water treatment ponds and liquid hydrocarbon fuels.
