Acrolein is widely used to make acrylic acid. Acrolein is also used to control plant and algae growth in irrigation canals. It is also used to control or kills bacteria and microorganisms in oil wells, cooling-water towers, liquid hydrocarbon fuels, and water treatment ponds. Acrolein is itself a pesticide and is added to irrigation canals and the water supplies to control underwater plant, algae, and slime growth.
