Impossible to have a system for ethical home delivery of food? The delivery system Ethical Consignments was born in Bologna, and we asked them how they are ethical compared to systems like Glovo or UberEats clone script.

“If you don’t pay for delivery, you are exploiting the work of someone who is poorly paid and treated badly”

In recent months the world of riders has been shaken by protests and unrest and the home delivery system, once again, has proved to be very problematic. In November 2020 in Turin, Milan, Bologna and beyond, events were held by hundreds of riders who invited them not to use the main food delivery services, after the 3 November Assodelivery (which includes Deliveroo, Glovo, Ubereats clone, Just Eat and Social Food) had announced the arrival of a contract signed with the Ugl union that workers were forced to accept, under penalty of dismissal.

On that occasion Just Eat Italia announced that the riders of its platform would be hired with an employee contract according to a model, already followed in Germany and Denmark, called Scoober,Ubereats like app . In fact, positions opened in March 2021 and the company started hiring . And in Milan a sentence was issued that fined some giants of the sector for 733 million euros with the request for an obligation to hire more than 60,000 workers.

But the unrest in the world of riders continues: today, Friday, March 26, the national network RiderXiDiritti proclaimed the #nodeliveryday with various trade union members in large cities and an invitation to all customers not to order delivery for one day.

In the meantime, a home delivery reality has been born in Bologna which intends to completely change the delivery system. Deliveries Etiche was born from two cooperatives, Dynamo and Idee in Movimento,Best ubereats clone script together with the AlmaVicoo university center , as part of a project coordinated by the Foundation for Urban Innovation and the Municipality of Bologna. We tried to understand what it is, how it works and if it can chart a way forward in other cities as well.

What should be the rights of the deliverymen

Respect the rights and protections of workers; guarantee fair and dignified remuneration; guarantee the right to health and safety; dismantle reputational mechanisms that fuel competition between workers. These are the first four points of the Ethical Deliveries manifesto of values .

The messengers are paid 9 euros net per hour and hired with a permanent contract and the related protections. For now there are only 6 but obviously, as the service takes hold On-demand food delivery, they hope to hire more and more. “On the main platforms, the deliverers are paid 5.5 gross per hour. And they work through algorithms that encourage competition, ”explains D’Alena. “We talked to many of them: they are harassed, they don’t know where to turn if they have problems.”
